I grew up eating black eyed peas every New Years Day for luck, plus cabbage. My husband grew up eating them on New Years Day as well. So we have carried on this tradition each year with our family. Do you have a tradition that you do each new year's day for luck, please share with your SH friends.

Not on purpose. But I just noticed that the 12 bean soup I made and had for lunch today had black eyed peas in it. So whatever they do for you I guess I get it this year.

For the diehard black pea traditionalists, eating 365 peas-one pea representing each day of the year-INSURES yearly good luck and prosperity. Also if one cooks up a black pea dish, drop in a penny. The person who finds the penny ends up with the best fortune.

Never heard of the black eyed peas tradition. The only tradition I've heard of before is eating 12 grapes at midnight all at once.

As far as myself, never had any set tradition to do every year except for kissing an hugging and the accoasional lying to myself with a resolution. LOL

    HAPPY NEW YERS EVERYBODY!

Good luck, health and prosperity for the follwing year, one grape for each month, all months the same so you eat them all at the same time.

I think it may either be a Taino Indian or a Cuban thing, it's been since my childhood.

Canned tomatoes, crumpled bread, butter, and plenty of sugar. It is kind of on the order of a tomato cobbler and/or bread pudding.

It is the same thing. I called them baked tomatoes because I thought I was getting stewed/baked tomatoes at the deli at one of our local grocery stores but theirs were made differently and were salty.

B&R; is common in my part of the woods. But usually it's a lot more common to celebrate with honey ham, black eye peas, cabbage or collard greens, stewed tomatos...and cornbread.
