To the Food Pantry, our Postal Lady picks the item or items up on her rounds. Since my diet has changed, there will be plenty of items. Hopefully enough to fill hungry tummys.
I don't only donate during the holidays though. Anytime is a good time for a good deed. My problem is that I don't search out to do a good deed, I just kind of do them when I see the opportunity right in my face.
But not just during the holidays. I'm also very careful who I donate to. I don't donate to any non-profitable organization that has staff making over a 100k a year.
1) Refusing to shelter or even call the police for a woman who had been brutally raped (and was being trailed by the rapist) because a shelter’s strict “men only” policy.
2) Firing 20 long-time employees (Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and gay) for refusing the sign the organization’s statement of Christian belief.
3) Openly discriminating against LGBT individuals whilst they continue to lobby for exemptions from local and federal anti-discrimination laws.
I always donate to the Salvation Army. My grandfather was discharged from the British Army in 1920 after almost 5 years service. He was wounded in World War 1. After the war he had no desire to return to Ireland so he asked to be discharged in Canada. He arrived there knowing no one and he also found out his mustering out pay would not be available for 2 weeks. During that 2 weeks he was taken in along with other ex servicemen by the Salvation Army and fed and housed by them. They made no issue of his religion (Catholic) and he settled up with them when his pay came in. I remember as a child he would always donate something when he saw them collecting in front of the stores during Christmas season . I am 60 now and I will keep that habit until I die.
I do donate at other times of the year ..
but there's something that truly is needed ..
at this time ..
and I do like to make sure that I remember the elderly that are in need now ..
for so many concentrate on the younger ones ..
but the Elders ..
this is the perfect time to listen, hear them ..
be a good visitor ..
and just enjoy the time you can ..
I donate year round, potentially less during the holidays since I know there is such a surplus and I think it's good to potentially "save" for after the holidays when charities are running low. With the experience I have had at volunteer organizations, this actually seems like a decent idea.
I worked at a volunteer organization. If people donate out of season things, they'll most likely be thrown away. I finish using the things then wait until right before the season that they become the predominant clothing. Then I donate them. Most of the things I donate are gently used clothes so I must pay attention to season. I don't do those Christmas tree gifts things. I'd rather give money to a charity that can compile it to get exactly what the kid wants. MP3 players come in many cheap versions. Which do they want? I'd rather let them figure that out.
My wife and I usually buy toys for the local charities during this time. We are far from rich, but we feel a kid should always have a gift to open on Christmas. My only regret is that we can't do more for them.
I donate in a lot of ways, 1) I donate my time to those who neede a listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on. 2) I donate clothes, food and money to special causes, and often when I see someone that I discern is in need. 3) I cook for my mother (who is 94), and my Pastors wife is no longer able to cook because of an illness, myself and severn others have been designated to prepare meals for she and her husband. I just got in, myself and another lady from our Church prepared a meal for them tonight, I cooked a roasted chicken & gravy, macaroni & cheese, hot rolls, cranberry sauce and a apple cobbler. The other lady made a corn bread dressing, green beans, and candied yams. Needless to say the meal was delicious and the Pastor and his wife was greatful. I have the spirit of giving and donating all year, not just during the holiday.
I don't donate to charities anymore. I have donated money to three charities in the past that all were supposed to be for these great causes and every time I would find out later that it was all a scam and some person just took the money and ran.
If you really want to donate again Walmart usually has a box to place toys in for children in your area. It's usually run my Toys for Tots and the U.S. Marines. If you can't trust the U.S. Marines who can you trust.
