Do you disagree with the prom rule?

I've heard a rumour that at my school they are enforcing yet another rule about prom. Not only have they made being allowed to go difficult, and you can't go with your boyfriend/girlfriend if they are from another school... but now same sex couples cannot go together. This doesn't just mean gay couples... it includes people who are just going together as friends. More girls than guys go so the numbers don't work out. It is a public school..... so why do they have the right to not allow gay couples to go to their only prom together?

There is nothing inappropriate about going with a person of the same gender, no matter what. That's discrimination. They are making it look ok to treat gay people different, to disclude them, and it isn't.

This is a public school, discrimination much?
Completely unacceptable. Not just because gay couples can't go together, but because girls can't just go and have fun with their friends. What's wrong with that?
I was gonna go to my girlfriend's senior prom last year (but we just ended up going on a date somewhere else, neither of us are too into school dances) and two years ago my best friend went with another girl as a friend. If my school said no to that (thankfully they do not, you can go with anyone, even from a different school) I would have thrown a hissy and gotten parents to complain. Parent complaints always freak out schools :P

    Wow.. times have NOT changed.

My High School of the Mid 70's has those same rules.. back then... PLUS some Dress Code rules along with touching rules and other bogus stuff.

Bottom line is, as long as it is not discrimination based on Race, Age, Sex, or Religion - the school can pretty much do as it wishes.

When I first was looking to move out of my parents house, I was going to roommate with my best buddy - - there were apartment complex's that actually NOT allow both of use to sign a lease together, because we were the same sex... so, I signed the lease, and he didn't! They were OK with that!

I believe they have the legal right to make such rules for their functions. These things can, of course, be changed-- but it takes lawyers and voters and lots & lots of cash.

Doesn't public mean 'state' in the US? In which case technically they aren't allowed to make sure rules.

Yes-- some aspects of our public schools fall partially under the aegis of State and Local governments, but I believe most policy is created by 'school boards' which serve in arbitrarily-delineated districts. They're elected (and possibly appointed) to decide on everything from curriculum to dress codes to hours of operation and budgets.

Federal, State and Local governments provide funding, so they have a fair influence as well, but (generally speaking) one district can be incredibly different than another, here.

I'm waiting for them to confirm it to my face before I act. I'm not gay, but I'm not narrow either so I won't let it stand. The best way would be to get the majority of students pushing to change it-sadly though most people at this school are 'homophobes' so....

I was thinking the same thing! Have your own do fundraisers. Contact PFlag tell them about the rule and why you are making your own and they may help. and have antiprom!

Zombie theme is always the best theme for anti-prom!

I live in Australia... and they say we are a free country! If it were then gay marriage would be legal, and jeez kids in a PUBLIC school would be allowed to go to prom together if they were the same sex. I'll take your suggestions into account :D I'm glad to see other people agree with me.
