Do you differentiate between a "cook-out" and a "BBQ"?

In the South and Southwest, we have usually called a "cook-out" a time when you might throw some hot dogs, bratwursts, hamburgers or a steak on an outdoor grill and invited your friends and family over. We called a "BBQ" a time when we had the grill out but also the smoker and we had brisket, sausages, pulled pork, and ribs. I suppose it might be the same thing, but if you asked us over for BBQ and you had hot dogs and hamburgers, feelings would have been hurt!

i do a bit, if your firing up a grill that's a BBQ, if your roasting hot dogs or smores or fish over a fire that's a "cook-out" to me.

Where I live, a cook-out is a gathering with family and friends where you cook on the grill and barbecue refers to a certain type of food, not an event. Even when we eat barbecue, we don't usually call the event a bbq. We also have pig-pickins where we cook a whole hog.

Yes, I know what a pig-pickin is. Good stuff. (I have a son in Greensboro).

After living in Memphis, I know not all "Cook-Outs" qualify as "BBQ" so I choose my words more carefully than I used to. We cook-out a lot, but occasionally do a BBQ.
