Do you cut yourself? If yes, then why?

I'm just asking this because I want to know why people cut themselves. I won't judge you or anything like that. I don't do it if that's your question.

Not intentionally. Because it's one of those things that's pretty dangerous to get too far into.

I use to do it quite frequently because I was depressed and unahppy with myself. I quit though, and I hadnt done it in almost 2 years. But yesterday I did it again because I found out my ex boyfriend (who I'm unfortunately still in love with) is dating the girl I knew he liked. It just pushed me pver the edge. I feel awful about cutting again :/

I'm just here to see who answered YES, and to hear their reasons, because I just don't get it. I cut my finger, changing the oil on a car once, and I cursed and yelled for 10 minutes from the pain, I can't imagine inflicting that on myself on purpose. I just don't get it.

I used to, I had a clinical depression and begginings of anorexia, self harm was and still is sometimes my stress reliever. I did it once, then it became an addiction... I believe I deserve it for messing my life up so badly. I hope this helps, although I cannot express myself very well when it comes to this subject.

I only did it twice when I got bit by a cobra and a black widow, to make most the poison bleed out my arm.

well, i used to... it's because i was so depressed and i didnt have any other way to deal with it. plus it had to do with self-loathing (basically i was punishing myself for being the way i am.) it stopped when i promised my boyfriend id quit and hid my knife (which apparently i hid too well, cuz ive been looking for it and i cant find it O.o)

I used to when I was in middle/high school. I haven't done it in years and I'm proud of that. I did it whenever I was feeling down in the dumps and kind of suicidal. It made me feel better. When I bled, I felt like the pain was bleeding out of me. And then the scratches and scars were a reminder of what I did to myself and why. I was in seventh grade when I started and I was a sophomore the last time I did it. I still have scars on my right arm but they're very faint. You can't see them unless you look very closely. They're almost invisible now. :)

....but my friend's daughter did until she learned to stop doing it by snapping elastics really hard that she wears on her wrists. This gives her the satisfaction of the pain and stinging she is looking for from knife cuts.

I resorted to that too and it worked and then I stopped doing that. I just stopped hurting myself all together and I feel alright. :)

Thanks! I appreciate that :) Now whenever I become sad, I write it out in my journal. I write a lot and I listen to music and I draw. Art... is my escape out of this world. Writing, music, drawing... it's all a form of art.

Everyone has their own way out. For me, it's listening to music, writing and drawing. Being artistic is my way out. I express how I feel through my art. My methods may not work for you, but you have your own methods. You just have to know what they are.

I do self-injure (not just cutting, other things too). Typically, three reasons why.

    1) I'm a masochist. (I presume this is self-explanatory.)
    2) I like the aesthetics of it (blood, bruise, scar, etc.).
    3) It's "medicine" for me; much like Asprin, etc. is for others. I'm non-neurotypical and like many non-neurotypicals, I am prone to sensory overloads/underloads ("meltdowns/shutdowns"). It helps soothe me long enough to gain (momentary) clarity so that I can either prevent the pending episode or get to a safe place (so that I can have it without risking the harm of anyone else). It makes me numb when I can sense everything and makes me feel when I sense nothing.

I know that. That's why I said what I said.It doesn't help handle the emotional turmoil it is mutilation, leaves scars.it's a temporary fix to a deep rooted issue. The intelligent way of handling a deep rooted issue is by not being afraid to seek help so a person can get the issues out in the open and learn coping skills and moving forward in life so peace within can be established. There is nothing better than being at peace w/ oneself.
