Do you believe there are any 'fake' disorders out there?

DemonChild 2012/07/06 18:11:03
Are there any fake or largely misdiagnosed pyschological disorders out there? And by this I'm talking about what some will argue are based just solely on behavioral characteristics. These disorders (for some) might include ADD, ODD, Aspergers, etc.

(Words and pics in this text box are in no way affiliated with my opinion, and my opinion is that psychologists make false correalations which lead to false conclusions. It is a pseudoscience rather than it's counterpart, Psychiatry which is really where it's at [Chem balances vs. inner workings of the mind]).

NO, I DON'T. Competent psychiatrists are bound by license to evaluate patients, by gathering evidence from several independent sources. I find that "Ritalin" photo EXTREMELY offensive. NOBODY is capable of properly "parenting" an child with ADHD, teachers can't properly teach them, family can't get along with them, friends are few if any, nor can they handle themselves. Ritalin is the only way to turn the cycle around and set it straight. Put my ADHD daughter next to a kid her age with ADHD who is
NOT taking ritalin, THEN tell ME the parents just aren't do a good job - yea, they are the parents over in the corner babbling, biting their nails, and prematurely going grey. We are the ones who are calm, happy, and proud that our daughter has gone from F grades to A's, has friends now, can now read a book without getting angry, and remembers where she puts her stuff.

They might be real, but that doesn't mean they aren't overdiagnosed. We'd rather pop pills than get at the root of the problem in this country...

I've dealt with ADD, dual depression, BPD, SAD, and a bit of OCD my entire life.... I can tell you they are very real.

I am in no way doubting that or saying they are fake, they all have a biological basis.

Our family has lived with Autism / Asperger's for 18 years now. It's the real deal. We've made great progress, but it has taken thousands of hours of intensive 1:1 interventions.

Certainly there are many cases of misdiagnosed disorders, I've seen it happen to often in schools.
