DO YOU BELIEVE IN "AN EYE FOR AN EYE"?

ANGEL 2012/02/28 16:20:40
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi

I am borrowing a concept of a comment I saw on a SH friend's poll, with
her permission: This is a topic that everyone can relate to whether you
are involved in Christianity, Scientology, Atheism, whether you are a
Muslim, democrat, republican, Pagan, Vegan, Libertarian, heterosexual,
bisexual, trans-sexual, etc. The topic brings people together to the
table commenting about something that we can all relate to. There are so
many polls on SH that divide people, that contribute to hostility, and I
just want to change the tide.
Any topic that can unite rather than divide is positive.

Do you believe in the concept "AN EYE FOR AN EYE"?

You!

I would like to say no, but when it comes to innocent children and innocent bystanders, it's hard not to want an eye for an eye.

No, not really. I'm more compassionate than that, I guess.

I believe in Justice and Restitution. Eye for and eye says to me that I am the judge.
That is why we have a legal system, to handle disputes.

Actually, no, but I don't think that a person that is running around DELIBERATELY doing harm should go unrestrained.

No I do not. To me it serves no purpose. The cycle keeps revolving.

People tend to misquote or misuse the "eye for an eye" quote. It was supposed to stop endless revenge cycles, not as payback. So, no I don't support it.

Very tricky question, as I don't believe an eye for an eye for petty things, especially as it pertains to myself, but I do believe that serial murders, etc. should be put to death.

"People don't learn from their mistakes without some sort of punishment...."

Agreed. I like the old Klingon saying: "Turning the other cheek only results in getting bruises on both sides of your face..."

This has been misquoted from a passage in the Christian bible so many times in order to justify whatever they chose to believe but the actual passage is as follows and has the exact opposite meaning, said by Jesus.

"You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.’ “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. “If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. “Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. “Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you."

I believe in restraining people from repeating violence as much as is possible, but taking an eye for an eye brings you down to their level.

Revenge is a vicious cycle, only when somebody stops the retaliation can the violence stop. It's like George Bush Jr said "Evil needs to be resisted." ~ it's a double entendre, for the public it means "we must resist evil" but for insiders it's an acknowledgement that "evil requires your resistance for it to have power over you". I remember the clip well, but I can't find it. It was great because when he said it, Laura was standing next to him and she shot him this little look like "I know what you just did.".

I don't believe that when it comes to child molesters or murderers. Besides, if I'm not the one being molested, it's not my right to turn the other cheek on someone else's behalf.

Karma exacts it's own punishment for the eye for an eye ideal. The one that wants revenge on another gets more bad karma in the end than the one the revenge is put upon.I guess one could call it instant karma.

No. The "Old Testament" approach gave us Hitler. The "New Testament" approach (Marshall Plan) gave us modern Europe. It's not a difficult decision or lesson to learn.

I agree but spending 3 million per case on appeals to enrich lawyers only punishes society twice. I say we make their circumstances stark (but with books) and an option to take a swig of Hemlock. It was good enough for Socrates.

no, a murderer shouldn't be put to death, a rapist should not be raped in return, a thief should not have something stolen from him.
those are not appropriate punishments for a crime, it is a very childish way to see the world.

No, dont believe in it always.its a double answer question depending on the scenario. (the question you asked, "do you believe an eye for an eye" on sodahead.com Because: when Japan initiated the hit on hawaii (pearl harbor) the United States responded with nagasaki and hiroshima bombings which accounted for an even greater mortality rate. If it HAD to be exact, as the, "eye for an eye" concept people believe, then, we would have been in big trouble..... nothings perfect........ just live as well as ya can without stepping on the toes of others (a metaphor). But some people just cannot let things go, and unfortunately, that is the way things really are. Im for defense, and protection. To say there will be peace (throughout the world) for 1000 years like the bible says, seems NOT very probable....and that IS the reality of it, (call it wrong or whatever you like) its about HOPE, making peace one person at a time. 2012.

To say that the people who gave their enemies The Marshall Plan were seeking retribution at Hiroshima doesn't add up. Okinawa had taught us the cost in lives to invade the mainland of Japan. Truman did the right thing and saved live all around, not out of vengeance.
