Every body wears a seat belt in my car -- even my dog ...

he sits in one of these
body wears seat belt car dog
    And wears one of these
body wears seat belt car dog wears

I've lived through six major car accidents. I would be dead if I hadn't been wearing a seat belt.

    Hi,
I remember having countless problems with my 5 yr old son just to get him to wear his seat belt.
If any parents out there are having similar issues like we did with their children i would like
to suggest something that we used to help get our son to wear his seat belt. I've included the link
below which will take you directly to a children's song we found online. Might be worth giving
it a try if all else fails. It worked for us.
    Kind regards
    Bob

I might let a child ride in the back of a pick-up down a dirt road while driving slowly. That was fun when I was a child. But in traffic, you bet.
Falling out of the back of a p-u going 5 mph won't harm you badly (my bro. at 4) but flying around the inside of a car from a broadside hit at even 25 mph has the potential to kill, and will cause harm.

My kids, grandkids, and all other passengers are MY responsibility and I take it seriously. If other people want to kill their kids, that's their choice -- as long as they don't ask me to pay for it or feel sorry for them.

It really is the smart thing to do. I walked away from my wrecked Maserati, because I had a belt on and the air bag was working, it was the first year for air bags. . . I got lucky I guess. . .

And given that my children are now adults and living on their own --

YES .. I always made sure that they were wearing seat belts -- in booster seats .. in Child/Baby Safety Seats when they were in the Car with me at all times. I would even went so far as to put in my vehicle an extra mirror that I would use to view their status in the seats -- IF I saw that they wiggled out of the belts -- I would immediately pull over and put them back in.

They knew I was serious about this -- and I also made sure that when we got stopped somewhere -- that they would wait in the car until I got all the seat belts off -- and then put their little hands on the side of the car until they got their little hands in my own -- for the LAST thing I wanted to see (and it is still horrifying) is to see a child dart into traffic (even in a parking lot) all of a sudden from behind a car's body. NO ONE can stop that fast.

Yes I do. My 10 year old still has to sit in back because of the air bags in front, my car is older and I can't disconect it. I make sure even if I have my daughters and their friends in the car they have their seat belts hooked. My husband won't even start the car till all seat belts are hooked.

Of course. We weren't one of those parents who in an attempt to keep their child satisfied, they would allow the child to move around or better yet, figured if anything did happen, they're strong enough to hold the child to keep it from getting hurt!!

Mine know the car does not start moving unless the seatbelts are on. Several years ago I was driving down an area highway and saw a car pass me with kids jumping all over the car. From the front to the back and back again. I passed a cop running radar and started fussing to mostly me about him not seeing her. Well, he saw me and pulled up beside me and gestured "what?" I pointed to my sons car seat and put up 3 fingers and indicated no seatbelts......he sped off and had her pulled over about a half mile down the hwy. I am not the type to try to get someone in trouble, but those kids were not safe.

It is the only law i fully enforce at least when they were children now they are adults there is no law to make them wear them if they ride in the back seat .

They just passed that law in Louisiana. I agree if the passengers are minors, but I personally don't think the law should include adults.

Most states who have the law don't make the adults in the backseat wear them but i am only know of a few states around my own.

Is an adults life worth less than a childs?
  • Sheila wolfshadow August 18, 2009 18:29:16
    Sheila
No, but an ADULT can make the choice for themselves.
  • wolfshadow Sheila August 19, 2009 05:00:33

But they don't always make the right choice. So we have laws that help with those choices. In an accident, if the driver has their seatbelt on they STAY BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL where they belong, thus allowing better control of the vehicle and limiting damage and loss of life. In an accident everything in the vehicle, including passengers, become projectiles, flying through windshields and crashing into the back of peoples heads (back seat to front) or into others in the seats besides them...including children. Hence, we passed laws that require everyone in a vehicle to wear a seat belt. It's a law we can all live with.

We have too many people trying to take away our freedoms now....I do not want or need a "gentle reminder" to do the socially acceptable" thing. We are Americans and that gives us the right to do what we choose to do in regard to little everyday decisions in our lives. At least that is what our country used to mean. If you have any question about how I feel about all these BS laws designed to force compliance to what is "good for me" watch demolition man and especially the Edgar Friendly character. I tried to put the vid in this reply, but since they changed the media thingie I cant find it.

BUt it isn't JUST about what is good for you, it is also about keeping others safe. And if you want to go and kill yourself, that is fine with me but you do not have any right taking others with you and that is exactly why we have a seatbelt law. I'm sorry that you feel the way you do but I feel my right to be safe with you on the road with me trumps your right to be loose in the seat.
  • Sheila wolfshadow August 20, 2009 18:02:06
    Sheila
And no one needs to tell you to wear it right? I am sorry you don't get the deal with freedom. I do not recommend anyone go with out their seatbelt, and I do not FORCE anyone to unbuckle.....there just should not be a law pertaining to that.

I drove next to an idiot with a car seat in the back and a child (less than 2 years old) sitting in the front seat playing. I bet she will bring a huge legal action against the car manufacturer and the other driver if her baby is hurt in an accident! What a rip.

30 years ago they didn't even sell car seats that I know of. I never saw any around this area anyway but I know they are necessary to keep children from getting hurt. I had an old VW that had no seat belts and no car seat whenever I had to hit the brakes hard enough to throw him against the back of the seat. I was so scared that I cried as much as he did I think.

To keep your child safer, make them wear that belt. I had a trick I pulled out of my hat for my youngest, the car didn't start until they were buckled in. I would play with it like I was having a hard time getting it started only if I saw they weren't getting with the program.

I'm not a parent yet, but I will make sure that the first thing my kids do when they get in the car is buckle their seatbelt. I won't drive otherwise.
My girlfriend is terrible with it and I raise hell if I catch her without her seatbelt (who says men can't train their women too? :P :) )...but then she playfully pouts and I lose...I hate when she does that.
