It depends. Are all schools equal? Do schools in impoverished areas have the same resources as rich kids' high schools: as many computers, as good teachers? I don't think so. So if a kid from a poor area shows promise, he's already beaten the odds and proves he's worth investing in.
OH I see now X3 Yes it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think we should focus on aptitude alone and leave out things such as gender and race
Affirmative action is just a smoke screen for quotas and job protection for lawyers willing to take any case that offers a payoff, no matter how meritless.

No,I believe in getting a job or a promotion because of your efforts and accomplishments not because of the color of your skin, that's racism pure and simple.
It was needed 50 years ago, but it has outlived it's usefulness. People should be judged for themselves not their race, religion or physical abilities.
That's true to if it is job related. Same goes with religion --- A Baptist church shouldn't be allowed to limit their search for a Church secretary to Baptists, etc.
It's racist and we are trying to stay away from that. But letting certain people who aren't qualified in over someone because of race or gender is not right. Not fair. And counterproductive.
