    Well, not "anyone", but most people probably can in today's world. The mentality of men protecting women fell into decline (though not entirely) with the advent of agriculture and subsequent civilization.

    Try Google Scholar under Science Journals - UCF had a code for us to enter to access them all, but you may be able to find it in an unrestricted journal

    Civilization provides for people to live independently. Now , if it were the stone age or if there is a reason society/civilization completely breaks down, my answer would be yes.

    I should have stated that "provide" should be omitted from the context of my answer.
    Any species where the male is larger/stronger, generally the male defends the female and offspring from other species and from other males.
    Society provides laws and police which allow women to live independent from males if they choose.

    Of course a man should protect and defend his woman, but that's pretty much commonly accepted in society. (I won't forget when I first got married and I took my young bride home to live with me, some jerk on a bicycle showed up at my house and I had to kick him off my property. I thought he was after my wife, but he just came to criticize the color of my house.)

    But in response, to your response, about my response, I was simply thinking as broadly as I could.
