Yes I think under some circumstances the mentally ill collect in groups because of economic constraints and substance abuse .

'Mental illness' does not always breed substance abuse. I've never turned to any sort of addiction to suppress certain issues. BTW.

it does happen though, mostly because that person might know how you feel more than anyone else.
people who aren't mentally ill need to understand that people with mental illness are still people. they just have a bit more trouble. and with support can live normal lives.
and this is coming from a girl who can't even talk on the phone because of social anxiety so I understand what it's like to be treated differently.

I suppose there could be a common understanding of circumstance.

Mentally ill people do not collect in groups as thought. Many mentally ill isolate themselves for fear that people find out and use it against them, like when trying to find a job.Only mentally ill at birth tend to gather in groups because that is how they socialize.

No,people who were born with mental problems. They have groups they go to a lot of the time. They have special needs people at hand when needed, but are pretty much encouraged to lead an independant life where possible.

People who have become ill with depression, for example, are much more cautious because they know the stigma that is attached with mental illnesses.

Not always, but I will say this: In romantic relationships, finding someone who "gets" you is everything. Depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety are considered forms of mental illness, and many people through treatment live full, normal, non-economically challenged lives despite suffering these afflictions. The thing is, your emotions make it difficult to relate to others. If a man with depression problems (something he is usually unwilling to admit) meets a woman who also suffers from depression, the odds are, they get each other on that common ground. In fact, I've discovered that it's a lot easier to open up to people once I know that they're in my boat.

Most people who suffer from mental illness are not violent. This stereotype causes more harm than good.

Certainly, you can find numerous delusional, irrational people gathered to babble in tongues in many places accross the U.S.

Not all people who suffer from mental illness are irrational. Clinical depression and bipolar disorder are the two most common forms of mental illness. With treatment, these people (including yours truly) lead healthy productive lives with normal relationships. It is comments like that that keep people from ever wanting to seek help because of the shame, stigmas, and stereotypes involved. Educate yourself and think before you speak next time.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go speak in tongues and pace my padded room for a while...

Over a 32 year period my mom who had scizofrenia paced back and forth in our house and wore a 3/4"deep path in the floor from the kitchen to the living room about 36 feet long .After she died I agonized about how she suffered in that holding pattern all those years.

I worked in a psych hospital for 3 decades, have a degree in psych, and am a reality therapist. I said nothing about "ALL" of the mentally handicapped. My point was in answering the question about whether "the mentally ill attract each other", and they do. I'd recommend avoiding the use of superlatives like "all" in trying to make points.
