Do the benefits of microchipping outweight the downsides?

Adopt your pet? Chances are it's already microchipped. I learned something this week. the microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. So tiny. Right now it is only detected if a vet scans your pet, but in future it is likely that even these minute corpuscles could be detected remotely so that some device can actually pinpoint the location of your lost dog or cat. This will happen within the next 5-10 years. Imagine the lack of suffering this technological gem will provide.

And yeah, it's very Orwellian, but the same can be done for children. I hope with all my heart that one day soon children that are abducted can be tracked immediately through a small "grain of rice" that will remove this insidious and life-destroying tragedy.

Bring it on. Microchipping. Not about surveillance. about love.

GOVERNMENT CONTROL.........Soon INSTANT DEATH ??? TOO slippery slope for me !!! We do NOT need this to hasppen.........WATCH CHILDREN, TEACH them not to get in cars etc people they do not know, teach them to take care of each other???

I like the idea of being able to locate lost Children / Pets and everything, but there are WAAAY too many open doors for abuse with this technology.

It could most certainly be used to help prevent such tradgies but it could alo be used to inflict them as well. An old saying goes "The path to hell is paved with good intention" This technology is just too invasive and easy to misuse. I personally won't install it into myself or any of my love ones. Its a personal choce I suppose however. I guess you got to weight the odds.

this would be one foot on a treacherous slope, the other on a banana peel. we do not want to go there. how the chips would be used would be totally dependent on the good will of our government officials. do YOU trust every single one of them with your most intimate details?

even if the government promised, crossed-its-heart-and hoped-to-die, that it would never, ever, ever, pinky-swear NEVER use it for nefarious purposes - - laws can be changed and the people can be helpless to stop it from happening:

have you noticed what's happening in Michigan? what do you think THEY would do if microchips were already available?

I don't have a problem with animals, as they can GPS my cat, but I would rather not allowing Big Brother to put a GPS on me...rather, in me

BTW, faith in a higher power is not crap to me. Believe (or don't) the way you want and I will continue to believe in my way.

was just discussing this with an office-mate the other evening ... this could make finding abducted kids a lot easier ... and then, when they become adults, big brother could keep tabs on them too!
