Do Stressed Out Men Prefer Heavier Women?

Do stressed out men prefer heavier women? Apparently so, according to a study reported by Time magazine. The study, published in the journal PLoS ONE, reports that "when men were placed in stressful situations, then asked to rate the attractiveness of women of varying body sizes, they tended to prefer beefier frames, compared with unstressed men whose tastes skewed thinner."

“This suggests that our body size preferences are not innate, but are flexible,” said study co-author Martin Tovée of Newcastle University in the U.K., in an email, noting that they may be influenced by our particular environment and resources.

HEALTHLAND.TIME.COM reports:
Most men prefer leggy and lean women, Gisele Bündchen lookalikes, right? Not necessarily. In fact, the body type that a man finds attractive can change depending on his environment and circumstances, a new study finds: when under stress, for instance, men prefer heavier women.

They might have lower standards and screw anything they can. It doesn't mean if a skinny girl wanted some she was going to walk away empty-handed.

No, not threatened. Why would i want someone who has sex with anything that walks? Clearly they do not think highly of themselves.

Going for a heavier girl is lowering their standards? Or your standards?

WTF? I'm not gay and wouldn't want any girl let alone some fat chick. If you care about your body, you want someone who cares about theirs.

What I asked, had absolutely nothing to do with your sexuality. But I can see you're not quite mature enough to have this discussion. So forget I asked.

What some people consider "heavier gals" are normal sized, not anorexic like L.A. chicks.

A while back it was said the norm / average was a "size 14".. and that would be too large for a lot of men, seemingly.

That's pathetic. Probably true, but pathetic. I wonder what "size" those men would be.

It doesn't seem to matter what size a man is, his age or if he is unappealing to the eye - that many men seem to seek "perfection", no matter how they themselves appear. I don't know why, but has developed over years and is such a double standard - at least in this country.

And the bottom line is, no matter how a person appears, ultimately, it is HOW a person is as an individual that matters in relationships and life.

I couldn't agree more. I have seen some pretty heavy men have the gall to make remarks about large women. Where in the world do they feel they have the right? Or (I don't use the word ugly) these not too good looking people will then turn around & say how "they don't want anyone ugly, homely, etc" again, they have the right how & why?

I have some thoughts on this. Men have not been constantly inundated with a barrage of messages to "improve themselves" or achieve ridiculous standards, such as being thin, beautiful, sexy, youthful, perfect. Since they have grown up not having had insecurities focused on, they apparently feel pretty secure and entitled, despite how they look or have anything to offer, otherwise. They are validated when some TV character is less attractive than the "wife" character. Even the "nerdy teen" in a movie or commercial ALWAYS goes for the "perfect-looking" girl, not the friendly, neighborhood girl who likes him.

It's amazing how some unattractive men can make blatant remarks or judgments. They have grown up in a world of "imagery" and became fixated by perfection and believe this is the norm, knowing little or nothing it seems, of connecting to another except through looks and sexuality. I blame a lot of factors on this, but why haven't there been efforts made to alter this? I feel sorry for young females who still have an entire lifetime to endure with this and from what I've observed, attitudes with dating seem the same as always.

Now, it's NOT all men, depending on how they were raised and being exposed to when young, how much they learned to connect emotionally to others, had good relationships with family members, etc., but they may be few and far between. (Sorry for the length).

No apology needed, I actually enjoyed the read. You pointed out something very interesting that maybe I (or we as females) don't focus on enough. That is that men didn't have to grow up under such scrutiny. They are more than willing to show off their bodies, even though they know it's not considered chiseled or "hot" they have such a comical, laid back view of it. Wish I could be like that. Then again, I wish a lot of the ways guys think were the same for us. It'd not only be tremendously easier for us but for everyone around us. I do believe that some men were raised just right, because they ignore what society tells them is perfect & beautiful & they instead listen to themselves. Kudos to the parents of those fine men.

Thanks and yes, the situation rarely seems to be discussed or addressed - like everyone just takes it all for granted. Men may leave the house to do an errand, clearly not bothering to fix themselves up and the heavy guys with their thin buddies seem to feel just as secure as they. There is the attitude of being "fine the way they are" and so secure that they feel free to make cracks about others. It would be nice if there was a "level playing field".

I wonder what it would be like if men had ever had to endure what women have - they have no idea. (After Dustin Hoffman played a woman in "Tootsie", he said he had such sympathy for what women had to go through, just to get dressed and maintain themselves). There are many aisles in stores solely devoted to women's beauty products with nothing equal for men. Women are convinced to use products that may do little or nothing and are spending money in order to build self-esteem - not to mention the ones that go for plastic surgery. And for what? They still experience what everyone else does in life and does it really make things better? Doubtful. (There's just a lot I've pondered on the subject -- sorry for going on).

And absolutely, there are some lovely, balanced men out there who may have wives or girlfriends who are lucky to have them.

Again, no apologies, I really do appreciate the things you are pointing out. Which will surely give me things to ponder. They aren't new but none that I have necessarily ever questioned or put much depth into. This could be beneficial. What you said about Dustin Hoffman reminds me of the men who may wear a pregnancy belly while their wife is pregnant to some how get a better understanding of what she is going through. Now mind you they don't get near the full experience but I give them credit for at least doing that much.

Exactly, that would be a thoughtful guy, for sure.

Yes, it would be great if the whole thing was realized and considered and if something could be taught future generations at least so this doesn't continue. Too bad, it seems things are too far gone for the current generations. Thanks for your comments.

Actually now that I think about it, there was some "study" done and I believe it was something along the lines of when a woman is pms'ing she'll go for a guy who isn't as good looking as she would normally consider good looking. Don't quote me on the pms thing, but I'm pretty sure that's what it was..

So.. what about women? Do they go for a less appealing guy when feeling stressed? I don't know.. I always went for types who I liked "from the inside out", not that I didn't find something about them physically appealing. If I like the person's character, they become even more appealing.

Again - I guess it comes down to the person - there are females who are attracted to superficial aspects, too.

Yes, it shouldn't be that way, like them only wanting a guy with a particular income, job, car, etc.. a lot of a superficiality. Sadly, I think there are marriages like that.
