'Meanness' is almost always a cover-up for for more serious problems. Being 'mean' is a protective measure that enables a female to feel safer than she normally would.

It's almost like a kitten who will puff themselves up, with all their coat standing on end to make themselves appear as LARGE as possible in the hopes that the adversary will be intimidated into going away.

Just yesterday, my neighbors rescued a kitten thrown from a Beamer in a plastic bag out the window. Josh saw it from his balcony, ran downstairs, crossed the street and saved the munchkin from further injury.

Brought the kitten to my patio and introduced her to my 4-year old Max, a tuxedo cat and she immediately became 4 times bigger than she was, before meeting Max. She was protecting herself and we all laughed at her efforts. So tiny, so brave, so lucky!

Kittens are cute. I have 9 right now thanks to some productive cats. But for a cat to become 4 times bigger from piloerection (hair/fur standing up) seems somewhat unfeasible... must have very long fur...
