Do Media Rating Systems Need an Update?

Most people are pretty familiar with the movie rating system. G and PG movies are pretty clean-cut, while PG-13 and R-rated movies contain content that could be seen as harmful or inappropriate for children.

However, WebMD reports that surveys show parents would like these ratings, as well as the ratings for other types of media, such as television and video games, to be more consistent.

A majority of parents surveyed felt there should be a universal rating system for all media, including web sites, music CDs, and games played on handheld devices.

There is also growing concern over the reliability of ratings. Researchers have stated that ratings tend to be applied inconsistently within each medium, and that similarly rated content does not always line up.

    But not necessarily in the way this article describes. I think that what is classified as "mature" needs to be looked over. I would be perfectly fine showing my kids a movie involving kissing/holding hands of people of the same gender (often those movies are rated R, even though there is NO hint of sexuality in them) but some of the movies rated PG or PG-13 have violence that I wouldn't be okay with my kids seeing.

    I would like to see a common system across the board for all entertainment media, as well as separate ratings based upon sexuality/language versus violence.

    I read very often on FanFiction.Net, and sometimes the ratings aren't very consistent. One rated M 'fic' might be rated that way because of 'suggestive themes' or 'violence and gore' or 'excessive use of obscenities,' while others are rated for full out porn (often very descriptive). Some authors will cut out scenes like that and put them on another site, while some authors have stories (known as PWP) that are porn without plot, as the name implies.
    If it had the rating system like in movies, then maybe the more insense stuff could be NC-17 and so on. But as it is, it's K-M, with very loose restrictions.

    it's up to parents to decide what is good for their kids to see at home, and they should do this by actually viewing the content themselves and saying "awesome" or 'not yet."

    Maybe just change what is considered 'bad' for 10-17 y/o (PG-13) by age....

    As a parent I think it would be most helpful if the ratings for movies, music, games etc. are more consistently applied. Also there are many shows on TV today, especially on the so-called "ABC Family" channel that are not appropriate subjects, like "life of a pregnant teenager", that IMHO shouldn't be aired on that channel at all. And the teenage soap operas I find are just another show exploiting teenagers and their issues with sexuality. I consider shows like that to be smutt.

    You think putting 'Rated R' on Nicki Minaj's CD is gonna make some mom stop buying it for her 11 year old kid? Besides, that's what they make censored versions for,

    That sounds like a cool idea!

    Now if only books contained a general rating ideal. I can't tell you how many scenes were forced into my minds without any warning of it being some kind of quasi erotica type.

    "So what?" I hear you say? Well, I'm an extremely visual person, people! Some things are just not welcomed in my reading. XD

    But yes. Ratings to give a general idea (to whom it may concern) might be cool.

    But some parents might take it a little too far.

    If you're looking for the content of a game, movie, or television series to see if it's "appropriate" for your children you can look online to see what it contains. But as far as the other end of the spectrum goes if kids want to watch it or play it they will find a way to do so.

    What about those who don't have internet access or even know what an internet is? Or only have "a game for their child" in their budget -- not internet as well.

    Well, on the games they have underneath the ratings why it is rated that. (for blood, gore, drug reference, sex, etc.) Even on E+10 games they will have that.

    Movies have that too. It's in smaller print, but it's there right with the rating.

    Well like I said, if a parent doesn't want their kid taking part in such things they can look. It takes a little more effort, but if they really want to "protect" their child then it should be worth it.

    Also, you could go to a library and access a computer and internet from there.

    Yeah, I know. But again, the question was "or even know what an internet is?" lol sadly there are people still like that out there.

    I think as much as there are people who are level headed and free thinking... there's also a counter part that literally relies upon the media for their info. So "ratings" and such are pretty much their "way of raising." Heck, I've been in Spanish harlem and PBS was pretty much the way of "raising yo kids.." That's it. Whatever the t.v. says... "We don't know.."
    So it's about 50/50.
  • Grammar... SidheRocks 2011/06/21 14:39:45

    True.. The rating system (along with people) is flawed. When it comes to television it could be redone and no harm would be done. I've seen some TV movies that were rated "TV-14" and there is no way in hell I would allow a young teen to watch it. Books could also use a rating system....

    I've noticed that as well! It's like someone else said .. "R" is the new "PG." And yeah, my personal reply also mentions how nice it would be to have ratings on books, it would've helped a great deal in my case. x)

    Yes, exactly. There are many people out there who do not or will not have internet in their homes. I think the sole use of the internet would be very bad for those who cannot have it. For example, in the State of Virginia all people who want to put a claim for unemployment benefits have to do it on the internet. They cannot go to the Unemployment office and submit in person anymore. And during the time that they are unemployed they have to submit their reports online only.

    G would be for anybody. R would be for 13 and over.
    Same with video games. E would be for Everybody. M would be for Mature, which would be 13 and up.

    Teenagers watch and play R/M rated games and movies. They understand the content and it's moral implications. They aren't going to go on killing sprees because they see it in a movie or video game. They do know better. The only ones who would do that are the ones that come from a troubled home.
  • rena Quantum 2011/06/21 14:34:26

    G = Is for Everyone
    PG = 9 years and up
    PG13 = for 13 years old and up
    NG17= for 17 years old and up
    R = 18 and up
    X = Adult only

    I think the R/M games played by teenagers but not all of them really understand the implications of the games. Children younger than 12 should not be allowed to play R/M games.

    I think you are seriously underestimating the youth of the world. And you didn't change it at all.

    I probably should've added NC-18, for the really messed up movies. The ones with disgusting levels of gore and sexual perversions/sodomy.
  • rena Quantum 2011/06/21 16:59:41
    rena
    What??
  • Quantum rena 2011/06/21 17:18:36

    For most of the R-rated movies. Movies like Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede, and many more involving really disgusting sexual fetishes on film, like the sodomy scene in Pulp Fiction. They would get the NC-18 rating: movies that wouldn't be allowed until 18. While movies like But I'm a Cheerleader, Lust Caution, Boys Don't Cry, and American Psycho would qualify as films that would get the R-rating.

    There is a really bad problem with the way the MPAA rates sex over violence. Movies like Saw and Hostel get the R-rating, which features a lot of gross levels of violence; while But I'm a Cheerleader and Lust Caution just have sexual scenes, and in the first examples. more implicit lesbian sexual implications.

    You really are underestimating the youth of the world. They can handle a lot thanks to probably already seeing it or reading about it on the internet.

    Not really...

    Plus, not to sound like a trouble maker or anything, but kids are usually just gonna find a way to watch/do what they want anyway. If they really want to watch an R rated movie, most kids will have a way of being able to do so...

    Sometimes excessive swearing makes an R rating, especially in the US,

    I check the ratings on some movies that are pg in Canada, but the US it's rated R

    also walk through a school yard with your ears open, is that rated R too?

    My parents let me watch R rated movies when I turned 7. They told me that most of the movies, except the movies based on a true story, were pretend, but violence is a real life thing. Violence, sex, happiness and all other facts of life happen, and the more I was exposed to this, the more I was prepared for the real world. My parents didn't sugar coat or shield/protect me from the big bad TV, and I am grateful for it. I have a better understanding of what goes on around me and I also care what goes on all around the world.
