Do Lavish $32,000 Birthdays Set Kids Up to Be Spoiled Brats for the Rest of Their Lives?

When we had birthday parties as a kid, our mom invited our friends over, ordered a couple of pizzas, made a Duncan Hines cake and that was about it.

But today, some moms and dads are willing to spend $32,000 on their daughter's sixth birthday party -- a day she probably won't even remember very well.

TLC's new show "Outrageous Kid Parties" features Nicole, a 45-year-old mom willing to spend the exorbitant amount on her daughter's princess-themed party.

The party includes a Cinderella pumpkin coach for little Gracie's arrival, and a $2,100 birthday cake that Gracie doesn't even like because the bird is purple instead of blue, according to the New York Post.

Jason, Nicole's husband, is forced to dress up like a king while mom, of course, is a queen.

So why does this mom feel the need to treat her little girl like royalty? Well, as Nicole says, Gracie "wanted the best and that's what she'll get!"

This is crazy. If I had $32,000 to spend freely, I would help some of my fellow Americans out who are unemployed and maybe buy myself something nice like a new TV. When I was a kid, we would make a cake, invite some friends over, and my parents would buy me a couple of gifts, like maybe a squirt gun and an inexpensive computer game and I was happy and thankful for what I was given.

It seems Nicole is not doing this for her daughter and her friends but for her own self satisfaction. It's pretty well self evident that her daughter is not foremost in her mind, nor is that poor sucker of a husband. I mean, can you even imagine?

This disgusts me. If you're going to waste $32,000, why don't you donate something to a fraction of the 15 million unemployed Americans out there. When people are struggling on living day-to-day, its unfortunate how selfish people can be.

I guess I don't feel the need to judge everyone on how they spend their money. I have been known to purchase things that others would find extravagant.

Expensive is a term relative to how much money you have.

What the hell? I would think that's a bit outrageous for a sweet 16 party, let alone a 6th birthday party.

What the hell can a 6 year old get on their birthday that adds up to $32,000?? I was a spoilt child compared to others at that time, and that is an amazing sum of money.

What the Child wants, and what the child receives are up to the parents. In this case the mom should have her head examined. If making your Childs every wish, want and desire come true, then you are setting them up for a HUGH Fall when they enter the real world.

It may give Mom warm fuzzies right now, the headache is yet to come.

I don't think the child will be spiled for life since she won't remember it. I do think the parents are foolish. I know kids birthday parties are a niche market for people who see how easily fools are seperated from their money.

I don't really believe all kids are spoiled by such lavish behavior, but there was only room for yes or no. At six, the kid doesn't care how much anything costs, it's all about fun and presents. It's the parents who are trying to impress someone and it's silly. But hey if they have the means to blow that much cash on a kids party then let them. I say a cake, some balloons, their friends, and Uncle Jeff dressed in a clown suit is okay by me for a six year old's party. I'd say the same thing for a 16 year old's party minus Uncle Jeff, maybe add a night at the movies or a skate park and get somewhere and sit down. And people wonder where the sense of entitlement comes from in the younger generations.

Without being familiar with the family, I can't really judge motives, but this sounds like like the stereotypical negligent parent attempting to purchase a relationship with their kid. It's far cheaper (and healthier) to just put in the time.

Spoiling with things... will set those kids up for sure. You can't buy decent parenting.

As some others have posted... I am sure the party was not for the kids... it was for the adults.

Shame on them. She throws a temper tantrum that her gift CAR is not blue like she wanted. (And meanwhile kids starve to death, are sold as sex slaves, and are turned into child soldiers all over the world) America, do you seriously not care?

You are right about that brat. Parents can give their children opportunities to learn how wonderful their lives are compared to the lives of children around the world.
My kids know a child soldier from Serbia. I will never forget the joy on his face when he came on vacation with our family to the beach. His face filled with wonder at so many things that my kids took for granted. He didn't talk to the kids about his life but he did open up to me. Our volunteer group was helping his mother to bring her daughter to America. The stories his mother told me shook me to the bone.

I think we take too much for granted and become disillusion about how the world is.
Maybe everyone should talk with someone that has overseas experiences like that.
  • Michaelene kanaka 2011/03/01 01:50:30

You don't have to talk with people from overseas to know life without the comfort of running water, paved roads, or schools to atten. That is all happening right here in America. The Appalacian mountain areas have some of the worst poverty rates in the nation.

"as Nicole says, Gracie "wanted the best and that's what she'll get!""

...wow. I knew there were stupid parents, out there, but...

...actually, I've seen worse. Not for a birthday though. Some mother wanted a memorable Christmas for her son, so she spent most her savings on fake snow for the front and back yards.

At the time, her son was 3 months old.

No parents should spend $32,000 on their 6 year-old kid for their birthday party. For my 16th birthday I got a kimono, two dvds, gothika lense, and flip flops. A cake that turn your teeth and tongue blue.

This is all about some problem the mom has - look she got to dress up like a queen. Now, the daughter is being raised to have a whole host of problems too. Already feel sorry for the guy she'll marry. She'll be her own definition of high maintenance. And should he ever upset her - well, she'll be able to run to the queen for a verdict of "off with the head" for that man. People really should grow up before they have children.

Doesn't necessarily mean the kids will grow up to be spoiled brats... I think these parties are more for the sake of the parents wanting to show off than for what the kids want..

It's flipping ridiculous to spend this kind of money on a kid's birthday party, unless you're a multi-millionaire... If you have that kind of money to burn, then it's your choice, but otherwise you're just wasting your money.
