Before people even knew what a tablet was -- and how it differed from a laptop or smartphone -- some couldn't wait to get their hands on it. Now that it's been around for a few years, it's time for kids to jump on the bandwagon. With their own kid-version of a tablet, of course. The child-friendly Tabeo will set you back about $150 and it'll be available at Toys R Us. Do you think having tablets for kids is a good idea?

LATIMES.COM reports:
Toys R Us said it will begin selling a tablet designed for kids that will feature extensive parental controls, 50 preloaded apps and games and a cheaper price than other tablets.

They can benefit from using one because there are a lot of educational apps, but they definitely are not NEEDED you know?

I work at Best Buy in the computer and tablet department, and have people coming in getting ipads for autistic children and some of those really are very, very useful especially for communication purposes and stimulation.

But, I don't think that not having the luxury of using one really matters, it's a luxury not a necessity. People have gotten along fine without them until now lol.

They will never have WRITING SKILLS if they get too dependent on those things, but then most teachers these days can not write well either.

If they don't they will never be able to hand write anything OMG that is what we need now, they don't know how to speel and now not hand writing?

They need a real tablet not an electronic tablet

They could if a parent spends time with them and helps them learn.

It has its advantages but personally I wouldn't get a tablet for my kids to use. They would learn the old fashioned way and hit technology a little older...instead of during important development.

Of course they don't NEED them. They also don't need nail clippers with magnifiers attached, bandages with balloons on them, or glow in the dark diapers. But that stuff is available and has its advantages, just like tablets.
I personally wouldn't find this a necessity for my kid to have but it doesn't hurt them in any way so if a parent wants to get their kid one, why not?

My one year old daughter plays with her iPad.. it's cute, she loves reading the picture books on their with my wife and i and she loves watching elmo videos on youtube.. She's figured out how to swipe her finger across the screen, turn it on, etc. I don't see anything wrong with it.. She still loves normal books and we don't let her uses it all hours of the day.. a few minutes here and there.. I think the new generation will need to know more about the technology since it will become standard as they get older.. I see colleges already turning to electronic text books, podcasts and electronic files so it's going to come...

I think it's a good idea. There isn't any harm in it, if they didn't have kids ones, if there parents have one, they'd just use that anyway so one designed especially for kids in mind is great.
Some people will obviously disagree but if that's the case then don't buy it.

I always put it on the cat setting sounded like someone was stepping on it's tail

Don't get me wrong, I played video games but I think kids will play outside a lot less as time goes on and it's sad. My elementary school didn't allow outdoor recess when it was raining though. This is Oregon. I played in the rain all the time when it was raining when I was little.

The summer months are my favorite months but what isn't too love? No school, hot weather and the ladies wear a lot less clothes. Cold weather is good cuddling weather though.

By the time my kids get into the work force tablets will be so common place, it is more likely they will be doing their work on them than PCs, so the more comfortable they are with them, the better advantage they will have.

Those learning tablets that allow your kid to practice reading, writing, and even math can be a good learning aid that is highly portable, especially for long trips in the car.

It's not necessary per say, but it can be useful.

I'll bet that's what my grandparents said when notebook paper came out. Why did the kids need paper when they had perfectly good slate boards and chalk to write on and with? I can remember my Dad asking why I needed so much paper. I like to draw and color. He wanted me to keep my paper for classwork only.

Nobody needs one, but if you're gonna give children some kind of computer, tablets are the most user friendly option.
