Do Father-Daughter Dances Promote Gender Discrimination? (The ACLU Thinks So)

Father-daughter dances and mother-son ballgames are now a thing of the past—at least in the Cranston Public Schools district in Rhode Island. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) targeted these longstanding traditions after a single mother filed a complaint when her daughter was prevented from attending a father-daughter dance in Cranston.

Apparently, the district’s hands are tied because Rhode Island’s gender-discrimination laws do not exempt such events—thought federal laws do. Strangely, the policy change banning these events was apparently made months ago. However, it only began to receive widespread media attention lat week when Sean Gately, a candidate for state Senate, announced that he would reinstate such events if elected.

The ACLU said in a statement:

"The controversy that has suddenly arisen in a political campaign over father-daughter dances in Cranston is old news -- the matter was amicably resolved with school officials over four months ago. And it was resolved for a simple reason: the school district recognized that in the 21st Century, public schools have no business fostering the notion that girls prefer to go to formal dances while boys prefer baseball games. This type of gender stereotyping only perpetuates outdated notions of 'girl' and 'boy' activities and is contrary to federal law.

"[Parent-teacher organizations] remain free to hold family dances and other events, but the time has long since passed for public school resources to encourage stereotyping from the days of Ozzie and Harriet. Not every girl today is interested in growing up to be Cinderella -- not even in Cranston. In fact, one of them might make a great major league baseball player someday.

"We commend the school district for its resolution of the matter, and are sorry to see some people turning it into a political football -- a game that they may think only boys should be interested in."

So SodaHeads, what do you think? Do father-daughter dances promote gender discrimination?

Freedom means having the right to choose. And male and female roles are different by nature, meaning there are certain guidelines in place, but they are still voluntary. If any individual wants to color outside the lines it harms no one in the long run and actually makes for a more varied and healthy society. Prohibiting such activities on any grounds removes choice rather that encouraging it.

OK, the really strange thing about all this is who is this daughter supposed to dance with? The mother?

Are they stupid or something? Fathers have everyrightbto dance with their own flesh and blood. So if a pedofile was allowed to dance with a young girl its ok? And young girls dancing with their dads is not?? These people are stupid. I never want to live in Roade Island....

Parents and children love to do special things together. If a family is lucky enough that parents and children are all in good health and loving, then they look forward to these rare events which they can do together. To make it short: the ACLU is nuts! Switch the events around if they "think" they are "sexist". Dad goes to daughter's solf-ball game and vise-versa. They should keep their noses out of the family. If the family is not a "basket-case" and are reasonably normal and caring. Let things like "life" go on naturally. Don't try to fix something that is NOT broken! Too many of them "are broken". Go try to help them.

I was a single mother, I never felt affended, when other kids went with there dad to father and daughter Dance. It is sad we are doing this, So someone does not have a dad, So if she can't go to the dance, there are other things in live she can do, but maybe there is something she gets to do and others can't do. I believe ACLU has overstepped.

The aclu mhas been out of control for years.....all because one single mother complained...there is nothing wrong with a father and daughter having special time....it is not their fault that the complainer doesn't have a husband or boyfriend...don't take things out on other people if you aren't happy

The idea is for parents and children to have activities that will bring them closer together. The ACLU needs to find something more important to worry about!

Only whiney, clueless idiots think so. If you think father-daughter dances or mother-son ballgames are sexist, you clearly have no idea what sexism is. It must suck to be the 7% who voted "yes".

Its funny how this article is trying to explode the matter, first of all the pics posted are of lil girls at a vallet class not a school dance, besides those dances strengthen father- daughter relations in a good way. And if they want to dance why not let them, I am a father and see nothing wrong with dancing whit your kids. As a male going to a ballgame with my mother, doesn't sound exaiting

There are mother son dances, and event sporting events that support both parents with both children. But at the dances, if the child doesn't have one of the parents, they are allowed to be with another figure that can fit the role, and if that cannot be done, the existing parent is allowed to go. These events are to get parents involved in things that they normally don't do or otherwise can't do with their child and allow them to have a psoitive bonding experience. With that in mind, the event host(s) won't refuse a single parent from bringing their child; they will ask if you do have someone more fitting to the role as it is important to the child's development to have both a mother and father figure.

When I think of Father-Daughter dances I am reminded of those creepy "purity balls" held by the fundies. I guess in a secular situation they might not be so bad.

AND they invite the child into a relationship that is questionable. Mommy & Daddy have dates and afterward are really touchy & feely with each other and end up in bed....little girls witness these things and ...... most of us know what happens in bed between the parents, but maybe the dad is not an innocent when it comes to his feelings about the little daughter.

Not me. You just have not been around the block enough times to realize the extent to which things like this lead into incest between father and daughter. Guess you think it is a bunch of innocense going on out in the world? Think again. It is a lead into the world of child pornography whether or not you believe it in your rose colored world.
