Good question! I've asked myself this before. I'm not 100% sure that they know their name or even fully comprehend English, but i do believe they know the sound of when they are being called. Our voices change along with our demeanor when we speak to our pets, especially dogs. We tend to speak to them like toddlers or small children when we get to playing with them or something similar. It also changes when we have to be stern with them. The changes they understand, the words may escape them though. But i don't think this is all dogs. I think there are certain breeds that are so smart you'd think they was human in their past life (if you believe in such things). German Shepard's, Pit Bulls and other intelligent dogs that I've had throughout my life have scared me with how smart they are. I love dogs for that reason.

My cat even knows his name. Of course he thinks he is a dog half the time, we swear he is a "dat" Love him just the same. Dogs are pretty smart, they know our emotions and give love so freely.

Not only that they understand most of what you say, or have the ability to differentiate between different sounds... We cannot say WALK around our dog but what he doesnt go grab his leash... Say Treat and he is setting in front of where we keep the pet treats.. Say Bed and he runs and jumps on the bed.. Do not count animals short in the smarts department

Definitely. But I think the tone of voice that you generally use when you call your dog has something to do with it as well.

Cats know their names. They just won't come to you when you call them unless they feel so inclined. My cats rarely come to me but when my boyfriend calls them they race over. -.- Also, their names are quite similar sounding - "Mercury" and "Mercedes". The right one comes when he calls them which is impressive I think.

Haha, perhaps. It just seems normal to me now. I think it depends on what you're used to. Dogs and cats are kind of like men and women, I think; they're similar, yet quite different. Some dogs are a little bit cat-like in behaviour and some cats are a little dog-like. If you consider male behaviour the norm and aren't really exposed to females than women would indeed appear a bit weird and visa versa. They're just two sides of the same coin.

Omg!!! Was she a breeder or something or just a major cat enthusiast? lol I can't even begin to imagine life with 50 cats.

Oh, and I love dogs and cats too. We had dogs when I was growing up but unfortunately, as I am renting, I could just kiss any prospect of re-renting goodbye if I got a dog. It was hellish enough finding somewhere to rent that wasn't a complete hole just with my 2 cats.

lol, I don't think they can spell their name but they will respond to anything that rhymes. My dogs name is Mindy, I just said windy, cindy, lindy, and she responded to all.
