Do airbags cause more harm than good?

Chr*stopher 2008/06/19 21:16:57
Yes, airbags cause more harm than good. Seat belts are enough!
No, airbags definitely help save lives.
I'm not sure if airbags are a good thing or a bad thing!

Automobile airbags use a chemical compound that is so toxic that even small amounts can kill. Neck injuries are very common. Other problems include permanent hearing and vision loss, delayed neurological muscle damage or brain injury. In fact, some people have been decapitated by airbags. Broadly speaking, airbags have saved many lives, but the potential harms are worth considering.

Technology always has its flaws. People get killed in car accidents and many pedestrians got run over in the early days before figuring it out. Air bags save many lives and will get better as we invest more in our safety. Of course, air bags won't save us from ourselves:

This is ridiculous. There are freak sides to any technology, but an airbag saved my life as well as my cousin's. I would hate to think of what would have happened without them.

I hit a tree with a Jeep and the airbags didn't even touch me. I don't know what their purpose is at all. They just smell really bad.

When someone gets hurt or they malfunction you hear about it all over the place, but when they do what they are supposed to do, and save lives in the process, we take them for granted.

I'll take my chances with an airbag then without one. I'm sure that many people have been injured when the airbag goes off in their face but just think how bad their faces would look after going through their windshield.

no if you think about it, if his or her face looks like that because of the air bag going off and think about how messed up their face would be without one

There are pros and cons to them. I for one am scared of being in an accident and the air bag going off. I am short and have to sit close to the steering wheel which they say is dangerous. I know though that air bags have saved some from death by protecting them from going out the windshield. I just hope I never have to find out if they are good or bad

mixed feelings, here, but I'm fairly petite at 106 lbs, and have heard that smaller people have more chances of getting hurt. The 'chemical' thing is something I hadn't heard about. How bizarre is that?!!!
Think I'll take my chances and have the airbags disabled.

I haven't done research or anything, so I can't really form a good opinion here. You have to think about what happens if you DON'T have an airbag. If more lives are saved with it than without it, then I'm all for it.

If there was none your head would slam against the dashboard or steering wheel. I would rather hit my head on a bag of air.

not if you are wearing your seatbelt. i rear ended my friend going 45 mph when my brakes failed and i had my seat belt on, front of my truck was destroyed, i didnt even touch the airbag. if you saw how fast they come out personally and it breaking my arm, you would have them taken out of your car tomorrow

I have been in two car accidents where the airbag imploded and it saved my life. I also had on my seatbelt but the both cars were totaled. I was lucky the airbag only burned my face and keep me indoor and off work for two weeks. The seatbelt left a burn on my neck yet I was able to walk out of both cars.

There are exceptions when people sit too close, as an example. But generally they save people.

Yes, they have their risks, but if something can save only one life, I'd say it's worth it. Imagine being in an accident with no airbag and crashing headfirst into your windsheild. I've been in a few accidents (I wasn't driving), and I thank whatever is out there that I had an airbag.

Airbags in old cars from the 70's could take a persons head off.
