Dieting Can Drive People to Suicide

~ The Rebel ~ 2012/06/10 18:40:31

A new study out of Rhode Island Hospital has found a link between restrictive food intake, or excessive dieting, like those exhibited in people who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder, with an increased risk of suicide.

Body dysmorphic disorder is defined by the Mayo Clinic as, "a type of chronic mental illness in which you can't stop thinking about a flaw with your appearance — a flaw that is either minor or imagined."

According to Science Codex, more than 75 percent of people with body dysmorphic disorder feel life is not worth living or think about suicide in their lifetime. Approximately 25 percent of BDD sufferers have a history of at least one suicide attempt.

The researchers found the link by examining the association of suicide attempts with physically painful BDD-related behaviors. These behaviors include restrictive food intake, excessive exercise, cosmetic surgery, compulsive skin picking, and physical self-mutilation.

I think OBESITY is the MENTAL PROBLEM. WE CAN'T TREAT a MENTAL

PROBLEM WITH DIETING. IT NEVER WORKED. HAVING SAID THAT because I

HAD MY OWN EXPERIENCE WHEN I FIRST CAME TO the states.

    1) I WEIGHED MOST of my life 102 lbs, but within 6 months I weighed 137 lbs.

Looking back why did I gained 35 lbs in 6 months?

    2) DIET CHANGE. Back home my DIET WAS LITTLE MEAT and LOTS OF FRUITS,

VEGGIES, FISH. In STATES I ATE MORE MEAT.

    3) ACTIVITIES: at home I WALKED, RIDE BICYCLE. In STATES, I RIDE CARS MORE.

    4) MENTAL PROBLEM, was deep in MANIC depression. I lost my country, my

family, my home, my job overnight. I ran away barely escaped with my 2 little boys

with just clothes on our back, flew out of Vietnam on one of the last "Baby-Lift

    Operation" with 25 orphans.

    5) HOMELESS and JOBLESS: When we landed in Los Angeles, AFTER I delivered

the 25 orphans to Red Cross, I lost my job. I did not EVEN get paid for the time I

CARE for the CHILDREN out of Vietnam.

    6) My children and I became homeless. The Charity organization I worked for put

ADS on the newspaper to ask for family to help us. We MOVED FROM HOUSE to

HOUSE, from TOWN to TOWN. I WORKED as a MOTELS MAID. I was A SOCIAL

WORKER for this U.S. CHARITY ALL MY LIFE, I NEVER WORKED AS A LABORER.

THAT WAS HOW I GAINED 35 lbs in 6 MONTHS. IF I DIDN'T HAVE MY KIDS I

    WOULD DIE THEN.
