She did. I had two defects: Something called an enchondroma:

This one caused cysts/tumors within the bones of my fingers. I didn't know about it until I leaned on a finger with my knee while caring for my toddler and heard my finger snap. It required a four and a half hour hand surgery that included a bone graph. It was found through a full body scan that I have two more of these, one in a rib, and another finger. Nothing to be done right now about them.
And also some eye trouble (strabismus /cross eyed!) which wasn't too bad, but required a patch to be worn on my good eye. I have never been able to see properly out of my left eye and it only goes slightly in when I'm really tired or applying mascara!
Did your Mother smoke while she was pregnant with You?

I was talking to my parents a few days ago, and this came up. My parents were in utero in the '50s, and said that both or their Mothers smoked while pregnant, throughout each pregnancy, adding that it was extremely common, and totally socially acceptable at that time for a pregnant woman to smoke. Now-a-days, of course, the sight of a pregnant woman smoking absolutely repulses the public, understandably.
Of course, smoking during pregnancy can cause premature birth, low birth weight, reduced function of the babies' lungs, nicotine can be found in breast milk, and recently smoking while pregnant has been blamed for SIDS cases. In extreme contrast, and perhaps his words were a product of the time, but the doctor who delivered my Father (in 1956) told my Grandma that if she hadn't smoked, they both probably would have died, because my Grandmother is extremely petite, and my Dad weighed 9 lbs 5 ounces at birth. I thought that was pretty interesting to hear a doctor say.
So, how about you? Did your Mother smoke while she was pregnant with you? If so, did it, or has it had any negative impact on you?

Thanks for your response and for asking such an interesting question!
the theory being that a low birth weight baby was an easier delivery
