Did you go into the profession that you wanted to when growing up?

I'm at that point in my life where i really have to start deciding on what i'm going to be doing with my life. I've only got one year of high school left, and i am really stuck on what i want to go to college for.
I'm really leaning towards going for something to do with art, literature, or game development, but i have no confidence in my skills as an artist, writer, or someone who deals with technology. So I've just been thinking about going for elementary education, since i'm good with academics.
So this all leads me to wonder if any one else veered from what they had a passion for in life, and how it turned out.

I always wanted to be in the medical profession thinking I would become a doctor, but ended up a nurse. I was in the process of getting my master's and had a car accident that caused me to hit my head on the windshield so I quit and just have never gone back yet, but I plan to. Now I'm really considering to become a CRNA.

I went the practical route, but enjoyed acting on the side

This is a very sad story, and you have every right to be angry.
Why don't you go into politics? You are a forceful speaker, or writer, and you would speak for so many women. Many feel exactly like you.

Thank you. "Young ones" should really "take control of their lives as early as possible".

You could also write columns in local papers or in magazines.

Sorry I can't help you, I am French and I live in France, chère Mademoiselle Skeptikat.

I always said I'd be a Marine and here I am but never really thought much of what I want to do for a career. I might just stay in if I can't ever decide.

Growing up I wanted to be a Pharmacist like my father was, and then I found out I was a complete computer geek. I wound up choosing graphic design/animation. They work for me though. :)

From day one (when I was old enough to realize I had a brain) I wanted to be a professional disc jockey. Which is why I flunked everything except gym in school but went on to become an idiot on the radio for over 30 years and now write a silly humor blog. Once an idiot...always an idiot. But, I'm happy.

At the time I didn't consider it a "profession", it was juust something that I liked to do that I thought could make money. You say your really stuck on what you want to go to college for, don't be stuck on going to college. College has been promoted as the end all be all for far too long. I'm not telling you not to go, just don't lock yourself in.

I used to want to be a video-game creator and then a real-estate agent. Today I desire to be neither. I may not technically have a 'profession' yet, but either way it for sure wont be what I once might have thought of doing.

I remember that i wanted to be a baker when i first started highschool, that always seemed like a good career, since i always liked cooking, and back then, both of my parents agreed that it would be a good career choice, and they would help me to start a business of my own.
But things have changed a lot since then.
