Did Megadeth try to warn us?

Kyra 2012/03/26 20:51:19

Rise so high, yet so far to fall
A plan of dignity and balance for all
Political breakthrough, euphoria's high
More borrowed money, more borrowed time
Backed in a corner, caught up in the race
Means to an end ended in disgrace
Perspective is lost in the spirit of the chase

[chorus]
Foreclosure of a dream
Those visions never seen
Until all is lost
Personal holocaust
Foreclosure of a dream

Barren land that once filled a need
Are worthless now, dead without a dead
Slipping away from an iron grip
Nature's scales are forced to tip
The heartland cries, loss of all pride
To leave ain't believing, so try and be tried
Insufficient funds, insanity and suicide

[Chorus]
[Solo : Dave]

Now with new hope some will be proud
This is no hoax, no one pushed out
Receive a reprieve and be a pioneer
Break new ground of a new frontier
New ideas will surely get by
No deed, or dividend. Some may ask "Why?"
You'll find the solution, the answers in the sky

[Solo : Marty]

Rise so high, yet so far to fall
A plan of dignity and balance for all
Political breakthrough, euphoria's high
More borrowed money, more borrowed

[Chorus]

Holocaust
You!

    Yes, they did.

Countdown to Extinction, in my opinion, is among the best, if not *the* best, album of theirs (older isn't always better). It's also their most overtly philosophic and has (incidentally) Mustaine's best collection of solo chops.

I love the chorus from 'This Was My Life', too, which fits in here... damn, I mean, every song on the record is so conceptually-interlocking, like a Floyd album...

    Anyway, it goes:

In our life there is "if",
In our beliefs there is "lie",
In our business there is "sin",
In our bodies there is "die".

But yeah, they're basically prophets. Or at least know what time it is, and which way the wind's blowin'.

Great song, great album. They're still trying to warn us.

I barely get to the graveyard shift on time
After pulling another grueling 9 to 5
I live from credit card to check
    The paper money's whirling by
    And I hardly just
    Just barely only just survive

    I'm living on the edge
    Reality is teetering
My mind is on the brink

How will I face the day tomorrow
If I can't make it through today
I've got nothing left to lose but my sanity
And the right to go insane

I've got nothing left to lose but my mind
I've got nothing left to choose
So I think I'll go insane

    My stomach aches
    Insufficient funds
    My cheeks are gaunt
    And my guts are overdrawn
    My head pounds
    Starvation's giving me the shakes
    Too much squalor
    Too much pressure
    Now I'm getting pissed

    I'm living on the edge
    Reality is teetering
My mind is on the brink

How will I face the day tomorrow
If I can't make it through today
I've got nothing left to lose but my sanity
And the right to go insane

I've got nothing left to lose but my mind
I've got nothing left to choose
So I think I'll go insane

They did. They did, and nobody listened (or almost nobody). They warned the americans, and perhaps even others (us portuguese, are no exception). This was released in 1992, before I was born. And 20 years later, it makes so much sense.

Wow. I was just listening to this the other day and the lyrics really spoke of so many problems in America (and the world). What really strikes is the "more borrowed money" line. Everyone is guilty of this. What scares me is that it's the debt that crashed us, and yet the measure of a "good" economy is more Americans getting into debt again. At this point, I'll be quite content to rent for the rest of my life, be debt free, raise a family, and die without owing anyone anything.

even though the song was written in 1992 the song is definitely has meaning today with way the ecomony has been going since 07/08

Well, I'd argue well before 1992. Mustane saw the building blocks of what we have now being laid down back then.

It is eerily similar. If Dave is a prophet the good news is that we eventually get out of this mess. As per the last verse.

I'd say yes. So did Queensrÿche....

Listen to the entire Operation Mindcrime CD the guys were way ahead of their time as they were right on time.

    They've given me a mission
I don't really know the game yet
    I'm bent on submission
    Religion is to blame
    I'm the new messiah
    Death Angel with a gun
    Dangerous in my silence
    Deadly to my cause

Speak to me the pain you feel
    Speak the word
The word is all of us

I've given my life to become what I am
    To preach the new beginning
    To make you understand
To reach some point of order
Utopia in mind, you've got to learn
To sacrifice, to leave what's now behind

Speak to me the pain you feel
    Speak the word
The word is all of us
    Speak the word
The word is all of us

    Seven years of power
    The corporation claw
The rich control the government, the media the law
To make some kind of difference
    Then everyone must know
Eradicate the fascists, revolution will grow

The system we learn says we're equal under law
But the streets are reality, the weak and poor will fall
Let's tip the power balance and tear down their crown
Educate the masses, We'll burn the White House down

Speak to me the pain you feel
Speak to me the pain you feel
    Speak the word [Revolution]
The word is all of us

A lot of these bands wrote this stuff in the late 80s and early 90s. I can't help but wonder: times were good in the 90s, but were they too good? Are we paying the price for 20-25 years of excessive comfort?
