When I was little we had an outhouse. This was used as one bathroom. They usually had honey suckle growing around them. So, bees are are abundant at these places. One day I had to go bad. I stormed through the flowers only to get stung on my upper lip. Thsi proceeded to balloon like Angela Jolie's upper lip. You do not know what you missed by not having an outhouse.

That reminds me of one of the not-so-funny funniest experience I have ever had. The event was featured in the Darwin Awards book. Some years ago I hired a couple of laborers to do some work in my yard and flower beds. I had to go to the nursery to pick up a few supplies and before I left I showed both of the laborers the restroom and the refrigerator with water and soft drinks. When I returned a half hour or so later there were a lot of people and an ambulance in front of my home. I jumped out of the car and asked what had happened. My next door neighbor, an 80-year-old-widow, told me she heard screaming and looked out the window and saw a naked man running around screaming and she called 911. Turns out nature had called for one of the laborers. Rather than going into the bathroom he went into the woods behind our home and squatted down directly over a nest of hornets, which swarmed over his south end. The EMTs did what they could to stabalize him and reduce the pain, then took him to the hospital. A few hours later I went to the hospital to check on him, but could not see him. There was a policeman seated at the door to his room. Turns out there were several arrest warrants out for him and he had jumped bail on a charge in Louisiana. I don't know what the warrants were for, but it appears his bad luck was my good luck. That was the last time I hired laborers at the local mission.

Many years ago when we lived in Houston I had several honey beehives in my back yard. In the 5-6 years I raised bees I got stung thousands of times. Never had any problems. However my oldest daughter, Michelle, only got stung once - between the eyes. It did not hurt her nor did she cry, but it did cause a lot of swelling. Both eyes were swelled shut. It didn't phase her a bit. She simply used her thumb to hold one eyelid open and she continued to play. Here is a photo a couple of hours after the sting. Bee Sting

Actually she did well. She grew up, married well, and now has three grown children. Unfortunately she has Lupus, which is far more challenging than was the bee sting.

My experience with a scorpion was the exact opposite. It was one of the pale ones about three quarters of an inch long, and had me messed up for a couple of weeks. Got me on my big toe. Foot swole up so bad I couldn't put on my shoes and had to get a two sizes too big pair so I could go to work.

That's more like what I have heard about scorpions. Getting stung by a black recluse spider kept my baby daughter out of the US Navy. She ended up going into the Air Force after she recovered - about 5-6 months.

Yeah, I had bad headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, and quite nauseous for most of the two weeks. The swelling went down fairly quickly. But I think as with most stings, while the venom in most is similar, it all affects each of us differently. In the Antelope Valley, in the high desert of Cali, we had these HUGE two tone red ants. Had one bite me 4 times on the neck, very close to my jugular. That was almost as bad. It also lasted a couple of weeks, except with the ants I got real weak and had lots of muscle cramping. I think you have the same scorpions in Texas as bit me, but also some more dangerous ones.

Never have been stung by a scorpion. I heard they were much worse than a bee or wasp sting. I've learned something today - again.
