Dialing 9 to get an outside-line in a phone system was around for more than twenty years before dialing 911 existed.

Besides, it would take an idiot to mistakenly dial 911 instead of just a 9. (And actually, they'd probably have to dial 9 then 911 anyway.)

However, America is rapidly becoming a nation of idiots. (Thanks, Jimmy Carter, for giving us that wonderful Department of Education which has so greatly enhanced the intelligence level of America.)

It predates "911" by at least a decade...

our system at work isn't so archaic as to make you dial '9' to tell it you want an outside line. Just dial the number and it recognizes that it isn't an internal number. lol

what about to dial 911? (my point is that someone has to, "purposely" dial 9 to get out, then 911 again? 911 call

Easy to fix, technically that is,.. just have the tech program another digit, some systems use "5" for an outside line. But here in NC we've started 10 digit dialing for all calls. Area code plus nnx-xxxx, Only problem is the 919 area code has caused a huge increase in misdials to 911.

We had to dial '9' to get an outside line a long, long time before '911' came out. I had a phone once that the one kept sticking on and the area code I called a lot was '915'. I got '911' so much until they told me I was going to be arrested for false calling. I got a new phone and never found out why the old one was sticking.

I believe that dialing 9 to get an outside line (for a business) has been around longer than dialing 911 for emergencies...
