My casual Friday question.... a step away from the rough-and-tumble world of politics.

I used to get a lot of plaque -- maybe I didn't floss enough. I started using mouthwash and flossing more often. Still, my dentist told me I got a lot tartar build up.

I happened to see a dental pick at the store and though, hmm.... I could do that and skip the dentist visit. Or at least I could clean my teeth more often than I visit the dentist and it would help. So I bought this Dentek Daily Pick.

Maybe dentists would suggest not doing this by yourself for legitimate reasons. And you should still regularly see your dentist. Don't take my advice on oral hygiene! But it only costs about $8 to try.

I use the pick very carefully so I don't hurt my teeth. But I do clean off a lot of plaque.

I was a dental assistant. I wouldn't use a dental pick myself because it may be too irritating.
But when I was 16- I asked for a water pick for my birthday.
Most tooth loss occurs due to weak gums-
SO make sure you brush your gums...and tongue too.

I saw that too and have not bought one yet. I think I will though. I floss with dental floss and these little toothpick things with brushes at the end. I also use a sonicare toothbrush. i am unfortunatly getting a tooth pulled tomorrow because it got cracked and it really affected me to be very diligent about my tooth care. And I have dental care insurance so no excuses....yes I will buy one. Let's get stock!!

Well my tooth is goooonnnneee. My mouth feels very wierd because there is a big hole up where that tooth used to be. But there is no pain whatsoever.I will be getting a bridge in the next few months so it will probably feel better then. To tell you the truth I never want to have another tooth pulled.

At 52 I got braces for the first time. I go to the dentist twice a year for cleaning and a check up and every 2 months for a tightening. I use a waterpik. Flossing with the railroad tracks in my mouth is a pain...

If you do not know what you are doing, you can cause damage to your teeth using these dentek Daily pick kits. I swear I clicked on, no thanks I'll leave the teeth picking to the dentist. that is what I wanted to choose, sorry. ps.. if you buy the plax rince and use it, it will cut your plaque down to almost no plaque, but you have to do it every day and before you brush your teeth. bedtime is the best time to use it.

It's ok, but it doesn't work as well as plax. it's made just for removing and keeping plaque off of your teeth.

I had the dentist tell me 20 years ago that I had an extreme amount of plaque build-up.
He suggested I do it myself and gave me a few dental picks. Works great.

I did get one of these things, I actually got one for the dog(not a good idea)., I used mine for a while but my daughter in law is a dentist and she was very much against doing this. I'm going to get it out again and have a scrub.

Really if proper sterile technique is used,it seems like a good idea.I had some injuries that caused tooth loss,so have to be careful.I'll ask at my next appointment though.

i made a pick years ago, but you still need to visit the dentist. hydrogen peroxide mixed with mouth wash every couple of weeks help remove build up that you can't see or reach. a dentist will tell you not to do it, but you have to do it in moderation, and use common sense.

Quoted from the sight: "The dental pick is made from soft steel." "Soft steal"? It certainly sounds like the ideal dental device. Since I associate pain with a good cleaning done by a professional, I'm not certain I'm up to the task of self-inflicting enough pain to the an adequate job. I'd still have to rely on Dr. D. to some degree, until the day I walk in, sit down, and here, "Nothing there for me to do; $175, please."

Why all the discussion about waterboarding?
pain adequated job rely dr degree walk 175 discussion waterboarding

there is a reason why great surgeons tend to have psycopathic personalities and there is a reason that there is a high suicide rate amongst dentists; looking into a face of pain and tension might tend to wear on one's own psyche

but i say leave the root scraping to the professional; there is a reason why the dental hygiencist spent four years in college to learn all the ins and outs of scraping the roots of your teeth and seeing problems that might be arising

I would probably hurt myself :-). I get good results from dental floss and brushing, but I may keep this in mind for my son. He has striations on his teeth that cause him to have alot of tartar build up on his teeth.
