We have to pay for their school then pay them to attend school?

The culture of dependence marches on.

Sure. As long as they aren't spending that on top of everything else. Pay the kids for attendance instead of buying a new gym.

In order to make government schools more accountable to parents, maybe the time has come for parents to pony up 1/2 the cost of education. Parents will become more concerned about what goes on in the schools when they find out it's not free.

That's what taxes are for. Here is my idea, get rid of public schools. Then attach money to the kids. You can choose the school for your kid, and the money goes with the kid to that school. Smarter choices.

Well yes, that would be the ideal arrangement. But with the teachers union being the largest and most powerful union in the nation, I'm not going to be holding my breath waiting for it to happen.

It stands no chance with the corrupt teacher's union lol. It protects those bad at their job more than it promotes rewarding the good teachers.

In any case, they have no interest in teaching Johnny to read and write. Their only goal is to condition him.

Maybe some teachers. Not most of them. Most want to teach but are restricted due to exams.

You want to pay students to attend summer school, fund it with deductions from teacher's and Administrator's pay, for not doing their job. Add an entry to the 'employee tax deductions' column of their paycheck and call it 'failed in my responsibility'

I just found this podcast called School Sucks a couple days ago. You might enjoy it. It's aimed at teens and adults. He does a pretty good job of explaining the purpose and efficacy of the government school system.

Throw the bums out and let them dig ditches for a living. Then maybe school won't seem to bad to them.

It is oh-so-easy for voters to be generous with other people's money, and it is oh-so-easy for politicians and bureaucrats to be generous with money they obtained through extortion instead of voluntary exchange. Moral hazard abounds. If you think kids should be paid for attending school, pay them yourself, and I'll use my own discretion to find worthy causes too.

As others like Nicole said, this can also create a perverse incentive for kids to perform poorly during the school year...

Exactly, the message is clear, don't feel like studying or applying yourself through the school year, no biggy, we'll pay so you can catch up during the summer, if you feel like it.

And hell while they are at it why dont they teach them how the second ammendment is bad but the first one just comes second hand......As long as you are not speaking out against the government or liberals themselves.

I'm not so sure the Constitution is taught in school any longer, since the Government pretty much has sent it through the shredding machine. But I hear what your saying,

Why would I ever consider paying somebody to do something they failed to do when provided the opportunity the first time? Next they'll want free college.....oh wait....

But, okay, yeah, it does seem a little strange. Don't schools usually tell the students that they're "being paid in knowledge"?

Not only no but Hell No. People who go to summer school are there because they did not meet requirements to advance to the next grade or graduate. Some just don't get it and need more attention, the majority however just don't pay attention, text during class, pass notes, stay out all night instead of studying etc. If they don't want an education, DON'T GO. BUT I AM NOT PAYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. This encourages students during the school year to DO BADLY so that they too can earn money during the summer ----- not by getting a summer job, oh no....but by sitting their butts down in school and doing more of nothing. Maybe I should just stop getting straight-As and working hard so I too can earn some cash next summer. It sure sounds easier than finding a summer job. (*note the sarcasm*) Too bad I already pay a billion dollars for tuition. If anything the kids should be the ones coughing up the money to the school for the teachers taking the extra time out of their summer vacations to teach their lazy behinds AGAIN because they didn't bother to pay attention the first time around. Sorry if I'm sounding harsh. But this is ridiculous. I WORK HARD to earn my good grades and you don't see me getting paid. The people that SLACK OFF and don't care about learning SHOULD NOT BE REWARDED!!!!!!! They shouldn't be rewarded for being lazy all year! If they don't show up and do the work that they didn't feel like doing all year then they should pay the consequences and be held back!!! Our school system sucks!!!! This is why I switched to private school. Get your head on straight USA government!!! Take some tips from Japan's school system or Europe's. Ugh...

PS - Besides, money is not going to make them WANT to learn. You can pay somebody all the money they want, but if they have no interest in learning you're wasting your money --- they WILL NOT LEARN. They have to be willing to learn and pay attention. Giving them money isn't going to work.

Yes...but conditions attached. Mainly to cover basic resource costs, travel expenses, lunch.... then more if the student is in particular need. This would encourage students that wouldn't normally have the access to go to summer school to bring up their grades. Of course, the sum paid should not be enough to encourage them but that said it should not be too little as to discourage.

and the people that can't afford to get to school on time and then go back home? What about the people who can't afford materials or meals with which to feed themselves?

By the way... it's not your tax dollars. I don't know why the hell the media broadcast it as though it is yours, but it's stupid and incorrect. Tax is when the government TAKE money from you. You don't have a choice in the matter. It is their money and not yours to do with as they please. Unhappy? Refuse to pay taxes and see where that gets you.
