We have to pay for their school then pay them to attend school?

The culture of dependence marches on.

Why now in 2012 ? Do they feel a sense of entitlement ? Swat the parents in the ass , empower the teachers again and let's all try our hardest at whatever we may be good at . Not everyone's a mathematician or english major or good at sports for that matter . Suck it up and do your time !!!

They should be paying to attend, not receiving payment for attending.

If they are in summer school it is because the didn't do their work during the regular semester. Why should they be rewarded for bad behavior.

Are you kidding me!? So, its summer school that we would be paying for? Well, maybe if the students in DC were not all rich stuck up anal buttmonkeys than maybe they wouldnt need summer school. Basically this question is saying: Kids in Washington DC are to stupid to complete everything on time because they are to busy spending their millions, should taxes be raised a lot to pay for the stupidity of these spoiled little brats?

I can see where they are going with this and what they are trying to do, but I would much rather prefer that, if they are going to spend the money for education anyway, it goes towards people who really want to go and can't or towards making school more effective to spark the love of learning.

If you go to school it should be because you want to learn/have a career requiring the knowledge, not because you make money. School has been such a wonderful thing in my life because I absolutely love learning and I'm completely for anything that promotes the love of learning, but I highly doubt that this would. (If anything, as far as paying students, then maybe a scholarship program based on academic performance which we kind of have now, kind of.)
We will not make kids gain knowledge by scooting them to the next level because they got D's and demonstrate a level of understanding of where you'd expect a student two years younger to be. I tutor and find it absolutely shocking how much basic knowledge many high school and even college students lack because of how the public school system operates.

Geez, if I failed at school, I would be lucky to get off with some detention and a scolding from my parents! Damn lucky!
Now kids get money to fail (I'm assuming that's what summer school is for)?
    What the hell!?

That's because, despite passing and sometimes even liking school, I just couldn't keep out of detention lol!

The problem is we have a failing educational system in this country and a lack of support by parents... It's a combination of both and I don't think paying will do anything to help their education, it might get them to class, but that's about it..

Waste of tax dollars. Cut the school budget by the total cost of the stipend.

You do realize you'll be paying for that too, right? When faced with a choice of paying a kid to stay in school, or pay for them to go to prison. Which one seems more logical?

Is the fact that they are getting paid making them smarter??? I doubt it.

IF and I mean IF it was producing smarter students then... MAYBE this is a good idea, but mostly it seems like a waste of time & money.

As far as they must not pay to attend summer school, I see no reason in paying them for studying. It is hard to have no holidays, but learning is important, especially when the results are poor, and studying can be combined with sports, for instance, to avoid too much sedentarity.

If students must work to earn their living and studying, they desserve of course to be paid for their work.

What an insanely stupid idea. This reinforces poor performance/behavior. If we are going to be paying students (which we should not) then I say pay those who work hard and perform well.

Give me a break. If they had applied themselves or gotten help during the school year they wouldn't have to go to summer school. Wow, reward the stupid. Teach all kids to not do their work during the year but go in the summer and get paid. Wow was a racket.
