We have to pay for their school then pay them to attend school?

The culture of dependence marches on.

You're not paid for school at any level, nor should you be.

They should have paid attention to their studies in the first place and they wouldn't have to. In the case of professionals like teachers whose pay is related to their level of education, in a way they are being paid to go to summer school.

Another gross misstep by our nation's capital's school district. So, now they think it's a good idea to pay students who don't perform academically and "act up" during the school year. How about making it mandatory for their parents to attend school with them all summer and make them pay the district for the privilege? Ridiculous. This is part of the reason America is going broke; stupid ideas like this.

If this country keeps going like this, what with catering to stupid, lazy kids, we will be a third world country. Did you hear that Maryland schools might give more white kids detention and punishment so it will be more even with black kids levels of the same?

As much as I would love to get paid to go to summer school thats not fair to those who are unable to take summer classes and to the teachers teaching seeing as out tuition helps with their paycheck. Also we are already in debt as is this will not make things any easier on lowering it.

These students don't have enough initiative to do well during the school year. Paying them to attend will just make them be there. It will not make them study harder or try.

OMG, this is stupid. If those kids and their parents don't see the value of education, just teach them to say, "would you like fries with that" and let 'm fail.

PARENTS should have to pay the full cost of their kid GOING to summer school. The kids have 9 months to learn the material. Learn it then, or let the PARENTS who failed to monitor the homework and grades pay the price.

Public education should not be free to all parents, there should be a cost involved so that ALL who live on the public dole have to pay something to put their kids in school and transport them to school. THAT would make parents pay more attention.

No one wants an investment to fail. So, charge a registration fee, and charge for the busses.

Summer School is a punishment, a little less severe than repeating a grade, but a punishment nonetheless.

If the normal encouragements of a teacher, the value of learning, and the prospect of a better future aren't enough to get these kids to do well, then let them fail. They should then be remembered in the system so that they can't claim welfare/public assistance later in life if they end up unable to make sufficient funds to support themselves and their families.

If they had the ability to do it When paid, they had the ability to do it without being payed. Once the paying stops, so does their attempts at education. They don't care what they are learning about, they want money without getting a job.

what happened to earning a living ? work ethic ? determination ? school is to prepare you for your own future. if you can't motivate yourself to prepare for a better tomorrow then you don't deserve a better tomorrow !

No. People should not be forced to subsidize failure in school any more than they should be forced to subsidize failure in business. The results will be the same-more failure.

I can see it now: You get paid if you go to summer school! Everybody, start lowering your grades!

If you need to go to summer school, you should pay for it. Instead of having to go to
summer school, it is so simple, study, do your homework, find out if you can do extra credit, so you can pass the class then to take it again. For example: I had trouble in English but we always had spelling test, so I would study spelling words, because that would help my grade, so I did not have to repeat the class. If you have trouble ask for help, see if your parents can help you or teacher.

Providing them with the education and remediation they need is a great idea. Trying to compel them to WANT such things... not possible.

It's worse. They aren't being paid to go to school. They are being paid to fail school.
