Dakota Fanning's Perfume Ad: Too Racy or No Big Deal?

Dakota Fanning isn't the little girl she was in "I Am Sam." But nevertheless, the almost 18-year-old actress's Marc Jacobs perfume ad has been deemed too racy for Britain.

In banning the suggestive "Oh Lola!" ad, the U.K.'s Advertising Standards Authority argued that it crossed the line. "We noted that the model was holding up the perfume bottle which rested in her lap between her legs and we considered that its position was sexually provocative," they told The Daily Mail.

perfume bottle rested lap legs position sexually provocative daily mail

"We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality. Because of that, along with her appearance, we considered the ad could be seen to sexualise a child. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and was likely to cause serious offense."

While Dakota turns 18 in February, she does look kind of young for her age, and she's wearing a girlish dress in the ad. In fact, Jacobs said he chose the actress for the ad because she could be a "contemporary Lolita." Do you think the ad goes too far? Or have you seen far worse? We'd argue that the ad turned out to be a little racier than Dakota may have intended...

It's disturbing that people think this is sexually exposing or sexualizes her. People are sick. She is fully clothed and looks pretty there is nothing more than that going on here.

whatever its no big deal, if she's under 18 her parents already approved of her doing the job, so whatever, everyone else can stick it.

I think it's because she's young, doesn't look 18 according to the ad review board, and has a flower blooming from her private area symbolising virginity, fertility, and blossoming, etc. .

So true! and that show can be very misinterpreted . I mean the actors might not be under the age of 18 but in the show they are, and they're doing very NC-17 uncensored things. which reminds me to go watch Shameless haha.

As you are likely aware, a large # of teenage girls are exposing themselves online and living to regret it. It doesn't make them sexy, and its not normal just because so many of their friends are doing it or because their "boyfriend" says it will be fun. It is incredibly disturbing and sad and I thank god I was a teenager before it became a problem. Not only does it affect the lives of these young girls but it has the ability to pervert the minds of every teenage boy to middle age man who looks at these images. It's trash. The ad encourages that teenagers should feel free to be slutty (like Lolita). If the ad had someone who looked older than a child or even 30 we'd still say it's a little racy but it wouldn't be quite as inappropriate. What makes it inappropriate is when the ad gets placed in a magazine that impressionable young minds are looking at. (Ouch I just made myself sound really old) Anyways, it sends the wrong message to them and that's what some of the younger people commenting here don't understand - if you are ever the parent of a 12 year old boy, maybe you'll figure it out...

Well, racy maybe, but this is the country, U.K. that says it's too racy, and was/is the country that shows a teen TV series that started a ruckus in the U.S. and was very racy in its content representing under aged teens behavioral activity.

I heard about this before I saw the picture and was expecting the typical lolita clothes and hairdo. What do I see, well I see Dakota Fanning looking a lot like herself (she isn't old anyway!) in a short dress with perfume in her lap. I don't even think that is a "girlish" dress. Frankly, its a bad ad. Not because her looks younger than her age (she looks 17-18 to me!) but because it is typical and uninspired. I wish we could ban ads for being stupid, now THAT would be something to talk about :P

This is typical of the world's "Hollywood" mindset - bring a child up in Hollywood, the music industry, advertizing (whatever) and, as she grows older, turn her into a sexual object. She has been and is being exploited. The list of young peple who have taken this path is far too long. This world is drunk with sexual obsession and if you think this is acceptible then you are under its influence.

I know a lot of people don't agree, but the point of this ad is to make her look like a Lolita and, well, she does. It is a bit sexual, she does look like a young teen, and creeps will love it. Everything is over-sexualized nowadays, and it's becoming more and more accepted, which is a shame since not only are kids being sexed-up, but kids are seeing images like that and taking their cue from it.
