Dakota Fanning Slams Sweatpants at College: Fashion Do or Fashion Don't?

Just like the Olsen twins before her, Dakota Fanning is now a freshman at New York University. But don't expect to see her wearing sweatpants on campus.

"If you ever catch me in sweatpants in class, that’s not good," the "Twilight" star told People magazine. "I've tried not to dress like that."

Ouch! Is that subtle dig at all of us NON-famous college students, who perhaps can't afford to dress like this:

ive dress ouch subtle dig non-famous college students afford dress

ive dress ouch subtle dig non-famous college students afford dress

You WILL, however, see the Los Angeles native dressed appropriately for the New York weather.

"I knew to bring a lot of coats, and my Hunter rain boots," she said, adding that pink is her favorite color.

Pink rain boots, anyone?

Fanning will also most likely have a little help in the fashion department from designer Marc Jacobs, seeing as she serves as the face of his latest fragrance, Oh, Lola!

We have to admit, she does look pretty cute. The bigger question is, will she actually graduate? The Olsen twins didn't last very long ...

I wear what I want to school. I work full time, go to school full time and have a per diem job. I just bought 2 pairs of Victoria's secret sweat pants, a yoga pant and a sweatshirt for school. I'm there all day when I go so I might as well be comfortable. People can wear Vicky's sweatpants that are 44.50 or they can wear walmart jeans that were under 20. I've seen people look decent in sweats and trackies and others look horrible in regular clothes, its all about how you wear your clothes. If someone wants to judge me, who cares because they don't pay my bills and I don't get any assistance either, so they should mind themselves instead of others.

I am also non wealthy and would not be caught dead in them. I can afford to look reasonable without having to resort to them for a reasonable price. they look downright slovenly.

If I could have went to class in my boxers I would have. Quite a few times I wore the same sweatpants to class everyday. If they passed the smell test they were fine.

All I got to say is dang. I thought all cute girls grew up and stayed cute. Her make up artist is a miracle worker.

Her little girly dress is too young looking. The other outfit is not about style just practicality. Will she last in college. Why not? The Olsen twins don't need college they are billionaires.

Ok, so I'm not saying it's necessarily a fashion "do", I just know that sometimes, you may be having a rough day, or had a rough night before hand, and it is all you can do to climb into some sweats and get your butt where it needs to be.
I prefer to always look decent and put together, even when I'm just being mommy and taking my daughter to Gymboree. I just feel better about myself and it shows that I care. That being said, when she was first born up to when she was just a few months old, I definitely did the grocery store run in sweats from time to time. I was so tired, and not clear headed, I couldn't even think about dressing nicely. But it made everything feel so much worse.
Also, in college, I wore the sweats occasionally too, but I tried to pretty them up. Cute sneakers, a cute t-shirt, combed, presentable hair. Sometimes it was the best I could do.

i personally can't walk around in sweat pants but i understand those who do and have no problem with it. this girl is just spoiled and a snob. not everyone can afford to come to school in gucci and prada... i like how she's ok with wearing goulashes that come up to her neck though lol besides she's like kristen stewart these days in movies all stone faced in every scene, never liked her... it's a good thing she's going to college because i think her acting career is limited.

Gee here I thought the main reason for college was to better yourself and your lot in life. See here again why do these stupid quasi celebs feel they have to open their pie hole and give their opinion on everything or that anyone would care? Nice dumbass rain boots you expecting a flood be prepared for some cosmetic surgery when your feet get tangled up you do a noser in the street while trying to text.

There's nothing wrong with wearing sweats to class, but I just can't do it. I don't feel awake or presentable enough unless I've at least changed into jeans and a T-shirt.

College is really the only time it's accpetable to wear sweat pants in ublic, especially if you had to wake up early or have a big assingment to focus on. But then again, you don't need to splurge loads of money to look fashoinable or decent.

Unless you plan to do something sweaty, I agree with Dakota. Its right up there with other fashion don'ts like mistaking your PJs for casual wear, thongs riding higher than the waistbands, socks and sandals. Lets face it, some of us look like we got dressed in the dark. Whatever happened to kulots and jumpsuits.

When I was in school I wore sweats to class occassionally. Your focus is on academics not fashion. As long as you're comfortable, neat, and wearing something that is compatible with the way you want to be perceived, sweats are fine.

A little high on yourself there? I really don't care what people think of my clothes. I wear whatever is comfortable and modest. If I feel like wearing sweatpants to class, I will! I still shower and fix my hair. There's nothing "lazy" about sweatpants. They're just comfortable. And some of them are really cute!

College students DON'T CARE. I'm living on campus and everything is connected. First week, people look decent. Come second week, it looks like a 24/7 slumber party, but the great thing is that no one cares. We don't have to go out in "public"-public. If you have an 8 am class, being cute is the least of your worries. That hangover won't make you pretty in anything you wear.

A bonus about college, from what I've seen from my school. It is not superficial in sense that no one cares what you are wearing. Do your own thing. Dressing up is for when you want to impress people at a party, unless you need to have eyes on you all the time. People are growing out of that stage of high school. After college and into the real world, we'll care then.

And hey, come to Minnesota. Negative 30 degrees and high wind chill are awesome. Those 5 inch heels blend in with the 3 feet of snow you're tracking through. If you live here and don't own at least one pair of sweatpants, or any loose pants for that matter, you are the insane one.

Whatever makes you get the job. The degree is the goal, not being approved by the "fashionista" whiners.

Sweat pants are for lounging around the house or at the gym. They are not fashion attire or going anywhere in. No class at all.

Yeah, yeah, and I wore makeup and straightened my hair every day in high school, less than two months into college that's not happening! Looks aren't what matter in college, and if you waste time on it--say you wake up late, or you just don't have time to primp--you probably won't do well.
