Cutting Out Circumcision Could Cost Billions: Do You Support Circumcision?

Research suggests that circumcision can cut risk of penile and prostate cancers in men, as well as cervical cancer risk in their female partners. Circumcision, for those who are unaware, removes the foreskin at the end of the penis, which would otherwise potentially serve as a haven for bacteria and viruses that can cause diseases including HIV, herpes, genital warts, bacterial infections and urinary tract infections.

In a paper in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, "a team of health economists and disease experts at Johns Hopkins cite the declining rates of U.S. infant male circumcision -- from 79 percent in the 1970s to approximately 55 percent today -- as responsible for billions of dollars spent in the U.S. on preventable infections."

Research says that the decline in circumcision has already cost the nation an estimated $2 billion. If the rates decrease to the 10 percent levels seen in Europe, "this could mean an additional $4.4 billion for the nation." According to ABC News, "the cost of treating sexually transmitted infections in both males and females that could be prevented with circumcision accounts for most of this total."

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
Declines in infant male circumcision in the United States could add more than $4.4 billion in avoidable health care costs for sexually transmitted infections, experts warn in a new report.
1970s approximately 55 percent responsible billions dollars spent preventable infections

Funny how many in this string of comments appear to know so little on the subject! But that is to be expected.

First, the study mentioned is but one, the results of which are summarily tossed out the proverbial window when one looks at dozens of far more impartial studies!

Secondly, I went through it in my late 20's after yrs of having lots of sex, and have had lots since, so I'm fairly well qualified to state that if people had even a remote idea of what sex feels like after circumcision compared to before, it would be gone by 6am tomorrow morning! Period! What it feels like is not even close to what it feels like before.

The problem as that it is usually done to infants, thereby safely (and mercifully!) removing any possible frame of reference. Yes, the human brain is plastic enough to adapt, deal with that loss and go on, but how sad is it that circumcised men will never have ANY idea of what it felt like had their bodies been left as they were at birth, and that the women they are with know that they can never be physically enjoyed as much either?... I hope sad enough to cause people to think before subjecting their babies to such a loss!

100% absolutely completely. I'm a mom. I have many friends with children, many of whom have boys and most of them are circumcised. These boys have no issues. For the ones who weren't circumcised? Trips to the doctor at least three times every year each for issues arising from exactly that. Not to mention that as a straight woman, a circumcised penis is far more attractive than one that's not.

I don't believe it is a lie. I have many friends with boys. The ones that aren't circumcised all have issues and infections repeatedly and frequently have to go to the doctor. The ones who are circumcised don't have any issues. The mom's with boys that are "intact" believed they were making a good choice for their boys, but two of them have already changed their minds after all the problems they've encountered and have gone ahead and had it done now.

it is called "hygene". My childrens father, although now passed away, was uncircumcised and never ever had any problems with infections or any issues. He always said, make sure you keep clean and there is no problems...think about it, how can altering the natural normal body be better than leaving it alone. Most mothers who choose to leave their boy uncircumcised are usually peer pressured into circumcising their boy, because it looks more normal.

I only put no because it matches best how I feel, it's basically mutilation with no choice for the kid. Once they reach an age where they can decide the risks, the benefits, and all of that it's simple enough that they can get it done in an out patient thing and decide for themselves. It's like when people pierce the ears of their infant daughters, wait until they are old enough to understand what is being done before doing it for them. Circumcision much like piercings are basically aesthetic and when it comes down to it, the health benefits to not circumcise are far better BUT it should ultimately be up to a person who can choose for themselves.

The 'research' that's being touted is 3rd hand Anecdotal hypothesis with NO solid evidence in support of it whatsoever. The 'experts' are shills to keep the $$ flowing. I plan to be a Mother some day, and I've done a LOT of research, speaking personally with many healthcare professionals over a year.
They all said the same thing:
"Don't buy the hype or scare tactics." and NONE of them recommended it except in cases where there was a congenital issue, and even then only minimal corrective surgery.

It is LESS pleasurable if he is not circumcised. There's no friction because the skin doesn't move with the penis. It stays in one place.

Actually there is more friction because the glans of the penis swell after the circumcision and the penis cannot lubricate itself if there is no foreskin. Also the foreskin is the most sensitive part of the penis.

What the hell are you talking about. the foreskim moves back and forth and make the experience more pleasurable for both man and woman.
  • KCMamabear Robbb 2012/11/30 14:47:38
    KCMamabear
No it doesn't. It moves back and forth giving more pleasure to the man, because he's the only one getting any friction, not the woman.

If the studies showed that 100% of women preferred circumcised men, you would have a point. Personally, I find uncircumcised FAR less appealing.
  • Robbb KCMamabear 2012/12/03 19:05:48

no study will give 100% result. However you give reasons that seem like they are simply plucked out of the air. However when it boils right down to it less then 20% of men worldwide are circumcised And most of these for religious and cultural reasons from third world countries. I was wondering just what you meant by it does not move back and forth. if it does not then his foreskin is obviously not properly loosened and needs some work. You don’t sound very experienced in this , I suggest you check it out There is a wealth of information available on the web. Just remember to use your intellect to sort the chaff from the hay,

well in Islam it is a MUST for dudes, it happens shortly after the baby boy's born (from where i come from anyway). We've known about this from ag-es, and the world just saw it.
*sigh* well, life goes on i guess.

Right but religion itself should be a choose. If a boy chooses to be a Muslim, then of course he accepts that he should be circumcised.
  • Stiffy Chris 2012/09/05 17:14:36
    Stiffy
yeah, well, since the boy is a baby at the time he's born he won't be the one making that decision. :)
plus, circumcisions are healthier and when you're older you probably won't remember a thing of it happening.

There absolutely nothing healthy about circumcision at any time, Mutilation generaly isnt
  • Stiffy Robbb 2013/04/04 22:34:49
    Stiffy
Well, this argument isn't going anywhere. So I'll circumcise my kids, and you don't have to do that with yours, okay?

"Mutilation" he says, go do your research.
  • Robbb Stiffy 2013/04/05 11:35:47
    Robbb
The argument was won a long time ago. The fact that a mere 15% of the worlds males have their genitals mutilated is already a good indicator of the good it does. But if you then take into account that the majority of the people that do this are Muslims and are poor and ignorant and do it for cultural reasons, nothing to do with any benefit to health or performance. I can see what your poor unfortunate kids are up against. Are you trying to say to me that if I did research on this that it would niot be genital mutilation? Perhaps you should go out and learn to read something more complex then a comic. Because amputating/ cutting healthy tissue from a person leaves that person mutilated. This practice is in fact one of the more serious forms of child sexual molestation. Now why don't you go and do some research. You should not be allowed to muck about with your child's sexual organs to satisfy you personal urges be they sexual or some other form of perversion.
  • Stiffy Robbb 2013/04/13 19:52:15
    Stiffy
Wow, " You should not be allowed to muck about with your child's sexual organs to satisfy you personal urges be they sexual or some other form of perversion."
I, for one, never thought of it in this sick way. Surprising you went that far. Anyways, I think nobody has "won" this argument; I still have my opinion and you still have yours. You make this seem like SUCH a DIRTY thing which is weird since Doctors may sometimes operate "down there" for people who need to be operated on "down there" every now and then. You know, health issues. Why are you making a twisted big deal out of it?

It is, whether you like it or not, more sanitary.

It happens in the hospital with doctors, AKA professionals in the human anatomy, including the pubic region.

Finally, you shouldn't go mouthing off about the honour of an entire religious population (it's really very rude and significantly highlights your ignorance); Because whether you get around to doing your research or not, it is a MUST for Muslims because it is a must in Islam.

P.S. I don't read comics. What the heck made you think that?
