Croatian Tattooed Grandma Cult: Do Grandmas Look Cool With Tats?

Tea Turalija discovered she belonged to a secret Catholic cult that developed when the Ottoman Empire occupied Bosnia. The cult members identified each other by tattooing their hands and arms using a compound ink made up, in part, of human breast milk.

The communists took over Yugoslavia after World War II and forced the end of practicing Catholicism. Ms. Turalija met some Pacific Islanders, who have a long history of full-body tattoos. With their help, Ms. Turalija decided to reinvoke the tradition of tattooing. Check out the pictures of Ms. Turalija and the other grandma tattoos.

When she got older, Tea discovered that all the inked-up old folk around her were from the final generation of a secret Catholic cult that developed while Bosnia was occupied by the Ottoman Empire.

    No. I don't wear a name tag and I don't welcome anyone to WalMart. And in shorts and a tank you still can't see them. Not all ink is for public view.

    I think that anyone who wants a tat should have one. I think it's especially cool when a tattoo reflects something spiritually meaningful to people. Although I'm seeing a bit of it in this thread, it seems to me that, in general, the bigotry against body art is beginning to fade in this country. I'm glad to see that.

    My Grandparent's were Hippie's .........they took my dad an his brothers to Woodstock ...when my dad an his brothers were teenager's .............that is so freaking awesome.........

    Seeing what happens to those cool tattoos after a few decades should clue people into the fact that this isn't something you should do without really thinking about it.
    Personally I can't imagine getting a tatttoo but think it is really trashy looking on ladies.

    Don't bitch at me if you disagree, just do whatever you would like.

    everyone says that tattoos will look terrible when you're 60. but who does look good at 60, apart from celebrities who have round the clock care and attention to their looks. they may look 'disgusting' to some people, but when i'm 60 and i have loads of tattoos, they will still be beautiful to me, because they will be a reminder of why i got them, and what they mean to me. to me, tattoos are always beautiful.

    I've seen some non-celebrity 60 year olds whose tats still look good. It all depends on where the tat is located, how good of quality it was to begin with and whether said 60-year-old has maintained a reasonable level of fitness.

    A few tattoos might be done in somewhat good taste and a credit to the artist, but often are over done to extreme excess. I am proud of the one tattoo that I do have. It was used to mark the spot for my radiation treatment series, just ten years ago.

    I don't think it's really fair to judge nor commend this woman for her tattoos. It seems that she didn't get them to "express herself," but because it was a rite of passage of the cult she was in.

    Some cynics say that people shouldn't get tattoos because it'll look worse when you get older. Do you know what else looks worse when you get older? Everything else! If these elders can still wear their tattoos with pride, whether they had to get them in a cult or they just wanted to express themselves, I say we let them be.

    Besides, am I the only one who thinks old people with tattoos look badass?

    No you're not. I don't get the fuss considering everyone who is going on about how they're going to regret the ink are ones who have none or tiny little things you can't see. A lot of the people who have tatts and are old don’t regret it and are quite proud of themselves. I just don't understand the hostility and the "know-all" attitude from a lot of the people commenting who don't have tattoos. And not only that but it seems like people are writing about THEIR dislike for it in turn assuming everyone will be regretful. Really? Get over yourselves. There's a lot of old people without tatts that still look horrible and do other things that are just as "distasteful".
