Crash course in laying carpet?

How easy is it to install new carpet in a new apartment that has old carpeting? I would use throw rugs, but I would have to wash them often....
So does anyone know? I am eager to see the responses... if you could each give me one step, and not repeat the same step, I think that would be awesome.

If you don't have the right tools it going to be a pain. If its an apartment and your renting why spend the money? demand the landlord replace it if its nasty.reply
