Could You Eat Worms for Your Health?

We still remember that spring break in Cancun when our senior class president grossed everyone out by eating the worm in a tequila bottle.

But could you eat worms to improve your health?

After reading preliminary research that suggested a whipworm found in pigs could help those with ulcerative colitis, a 34-year-old California man with severe gastrointestinal problems tracked down and ingested eggs from Trichuris trichiura, a similar roundworm that infects humans, ABC News reports.

After a few months, the abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea associated with his colitis improved dramatically, and after a second "booster" dose of worm eggs, he remains in remission more than four years later.

Worms may help more than just colitis. In the past five years, research has suggested that other autoimmune disorders, such as Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease and multiple sclerosis, may also benefit from a targeted parasitic infection, ABC reports.

Who needs doctors when you have worms?

I have Chron's Disease, and trust me, no laughing matter.

If worms could help, then damn, I would go for it.
I mean seriously, not like I have much to lose if I have to resort to that, eh?

There are other forms of protein. I don't think that worms contain rare substances that cannot be found in something else.

It's nto eating worms is it. It's ingesting the eggs so they can live inside you. Which is all the more creepier (like Alien... less cool). However if it was a case of life and death, or pain and painless, or Bloody Poop and Happy anus. I'm going to be ingesting those worms so i can live, without pain and a happy anus.

When in Paris, I barely got an oyster down (slip slidding down the throat) and I couldn't bring a snail halfway to my mouth. Snails, slugs, worms are all the same. Even if I was hypnotized into eating a worm, my system would reject it and I'd throw it up.
p.s. I NEVER ate a worm with tequila that stuff is for tourists

If you get a worm in your tequila ask for a refund.

The Mexican drink you're thinking about is mezcal. Yes, Mexico has more than one native alcoholic beverage. Shocking, no?

Stupid question is stupid. If you eat worms, they might eat up the eggs from the roundworm but it won't take long before they start eating up the walls of your intestines and laying their own eggs as well. It's like trying to stop a kitchen fire by throwing a stack of books into the fire. It's just plain counter productive.

This is fascinating. But the thought of eating worms makes me sick. I guess if I were in terrible shape, I might try it. I am a big believer in holistic cures. I've taken a lot of vitamins over the past 10 years and I'm in great health at 51. I even run.

Why does healthy food have to keep getting nastier and nastier can't we just be happy with salads?
  • MissJo 2010/12/05 23:29:19
    I don't know.
I have an ulcer, but it really isn't that bad unless I drink lemonade (owwwwwwwww) and I only got bloody #2s once. If it gets any worse... I may be REALLY tempted to eat worm eggs but... I'm just not sure.

    That's really not my thing.
  • Vipor_GG 2010/12/05 23:22:10
    Sure, I could
To survive sure I could. I have heard of people ingesting tape worm eggs to loose weight. It works, but there is a good chance that it can cause you harm and even death.

I've eaten them before. Not a biggie. Ants, squirrels, ravens, etc., too. And I am not "sorry " about it.
The average person eats something like 8 lbs. of dirt a year and look at this bit:
each year the average person will "eat" several insects while they are sleeping. During the average lifetime, a person consumes about seventy insects and ten spiders during their sleep. According to some people, beetles have a taste that is similar to apples while wasps taste like pine nuts.
I "drank" a yellowjacket wasp once. It was in my orange juice and I didn't notice.
