Confederate flag dress gets teen sent home from prom
Tennessee teenager was turned down from her high school prom for
wearing a red, white and blue sequined dress that resembled the
Confederate battle flag, the Jackson Sun reported.

When 18-year-old Texanna Edwards showed up to the dance Saturday in
the controversial dress, knee-length with thick blue ribbon crossed at
her hip, officials told her the outfit was “offensive and inappropriate”
and did not allow her to enter the event.

A teacher had counseled her not to wear the dress to prom or to get approval before the dance.

“I didn’t talk with administration because we wore rebel flags all
through my four years at Gibson County (High School),” Edwards said in
the story. “… I asked a bunch of people before I had the dress made and
they all loved the idea.”

Edwards’ school is located in western Tennessee, about 30 miles north of Jackson.

She told the newspaper that both black and white classmates
complimented her attire, and her mom said they had spent $500 on
preparations for the big dance.

A spokesman for the school district defended the principal’s decision
not to admit Edwards, saying that he was taking precautions to prevent
any incidents sparked by such a prominent display of the Confederate
icon.

That doesn't make it wrong on her part. I once wore a shirt to Disneyland that had an upside down cross on it from chest to belly button & said "THIS IS MY NEW FVCKING RELIGION" on the back. So what?

If the same school had no problem with her wearing rebel flag t-shirts all year why get all defensive about that dress? It resembles the flag but it is NOT the flag. She should have gotten offical permission but I think it was harsh to ban her from entering her prom.

Well I think that woman has the right to wear what ever design she wants. I mean the Confederate flag is the Confederate flag, obviously she is not ashamed of her heritage, and she should not be condemned for it. Especially when it is not hurting ANYONE.

In short, "Freedom of Speech and expression", We are not at war, so let her wear what she wants.

I think she looks fine. The Comfederate flag was a proud battle flag and I see nothing wrong with it. So much for the land of the free.

I'm glad my mom doesn't work at her school. She would have probably cuffed her.
I don't care for Confederates but my mom... she hates white people period.

Absolutely ridiculous. The Confederate flag is'nt the least bit racist and it was never intended to be. If a person wants to display their southern heritage then why the hell should some school say they can't huh?

It was a free country. Obama has taken away many of our liberties. Politically correct crap has removed many others. She should have the right to take what she knew in advance was a risk. As she was warned, I can't say she should have been surprised.

I personally don't like depictions of the Confederate flag, but that's just my opinion. A lot of people (especially in Georgia, where I live) have the rebel flag or attire with the rebel flag on it or whatever, and wearing that dress wasn't causing anyone any harm.

That flag's white stripes don't overlap at the intersection of the blue bars.
I guess she's just a little too far north.
She probably wouldn't have had a problem in Alabama or Georgia.

Elisa there are times that the truth is not a popular thing to say or is not very well received by some. But that does not change the fact that truth is still truth., when we here in America start to accept that fact the secular mentality will start to dissipate.

It is so obvious that American's choose sides based on what is popular.., or who we love..., or tradition..., or arterial motives oppose to the reality that right is right no matter what. There is a cable TV show called the Bill Maher show.., on it he has a statue that he awards to people with their head up their ass. In fact the statue is made depicting that image.., my point here is simple., people that seeks to harness other peoples rights deserves this award...I'm just saying....JOMO

Most Southern slaves were better treated than the children chained to equipment in Yankee factories. Perhaps if you studied history more closely...

I guess you could wear that. It looks kinda of dumb. I mean if my daughter had wanted to wear a Cherokee flag to the prom I'd suggest she find another more appropriate dress. But to each their own.

Prom is a "class function" I can understand if the class as whole had a unanimous vote telling her no, but come on. She should sue the principal and school district, free speech rights were violated plus her once in a lifetime prom experience is gone

i think she deserves to be at the prom cause i always supported the confederate and the other one and she deserves the rights to be there cause i would do the same just if they tried i would punch the person who said that and i wouldn't care if it was a teacher i would tell them off by saying "hey it's a free country i deserve the right to be here" so i wouldn't really punch somebody really i'm not that mean.

If she had of talk to the admin first, she would have learned her dress is offensive and wore another one. The dress is ugly and makes her look even more unappealing than she looks already.
