Climate Change, Chlamydia Killing Koalas: Are Humans to Blame?

Who can resist adorable koalas? But sadly, the marsupial is expected to go extinct in less than 30 years, thanks to climate change, urban development and ... chlamydia.

While climate change and urban development are said to be the main culprits, the bacterial infection (a dreaded sexually transmitted disease among humans) is also playing a role, The Telegraph reports.

In some parts of Australia, the koala population has been reduced to 20 percent of what it once was, Le Monde reports. Some experts say koalas could go extinct in less than 30 years, according to the Telegraph.

Nevertheless, Australia is hesitating to put the cuddly koala on its endangered species list.

If koalas go extinct, will humans be to blame?

Of COURSE we're to blame. Two words: Global Warming.
SMH. Who else are you going to blame? Do you see any other species polluting and destroying the planet as much as humans? I THINK NOT.
FYI...when the End comes and we're all breathing artificial air and drinking artificial water...when everything you eat is freeze dried and nothing is fresh...when the planet is so dead we have to live quarantined from the real air... Remember this, and blame your own damn selves for killing EVERYTHING.

Exactly The earth isn't rotating like it use to and we just had the coolest and longest winter. Things cycle and with everything that effects the earth from space there is much more going on than any of tthe idiots want to look. at. Heck they are even doing that while in captivity so how is the supposed man caused weather causing that.

I said yes because "probably" or "undecided" was not available. There may be a bounty of factors, but I would not be surprised if humans came into play.

hmmm, I don't think humans are the reason they will be considered endangered in 30 years. If anyone has been to Austrailia you would clearly see there is not an overpopulation of Humans in Austrailia. And there is still LOTS of land that has been untouched by man. If it get's to a point where they are considered endangered the one's that are left will be saved and put some place safe. If we don't become extinct ourselves. (joking on the last comment)

Have you even been to Australia? The Koala population is declining rapidly, just because there's still lots of land that hasn't been ruined by people doesn't mean anything. If you knew anything about Koalas you'd know they only live in certian kinds of trees (eucalyptus) and they don't move very fast or far, so they aren't going to be able to go and find the areas uneffected by people.

We won't know for 30 years, the article says possibility and it is usually Man, that saves species otherwise they would die out completely. There have been thousands of species before Man got involved that died out and became extinct before man populated the earth as heavily as we have. I have a ton of friends that live there. I spoke to 2 of them just last week. And they said they are fine they see them around all the time.

I guess we have heard two sides of the story then. Because I speak to my friends constantly infact I am writing a jingle for a Clothing Company called Sartso. I will be there in a few months. When is the last time you were there? And when is the lasttime you spoke to some who lives there?
  • MariaWade MariaWade June 23, 2011 21:41:56 (edited)
    MariaWade
Sartso is located in Australia, and the article clearly states in the next 30 years there is a possibility. It did not say it was enevitable.
  • Lis MariaWade June 23, 2011 22:31:51

July and August, I was there last summer. A couple weeks ago, you aren't the only one with friends who live there.

All I am saying is we are two people with friends have different opinions, you are not the only one. You attacked me and try to prove me wrong. There is no right and no wrong answer to this article at this time. So what we know people there, and natives who live their have two different opinions as so do we. There is no proof that they will be extinct, the article says possibility! If you do not have an actual fact to base a decision on which you nor I have ACTUAL FACTS TO EVEN BASE an opinion on. We are basing opinion's on DICTATED opinions, not proof. So TRUELY there is NO DEBATE OR ARGUEMENT. If the Government of Austrailia determines they are actually in endangered of being extinct (WHICH ARE HUMANS DECISION) Obviously they will make that determination and do what they can to perserve them. The Earth is ABOUT 35million years old, since then there have been millions of species on this earth that are now extinct. Humans are not the reason for specie extinction it is clearly a process. If man were not here eventually that specie would become extinct!
  • Lis MariaWade June 26, 2011 19:41:36
