Cinco de Mayo: Legit Historical Holiday or Just an Excuse to Drink?

Most Americans have no idea why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo. But that sure doesn’t stop them from enjoying the party!

Celebrations of the spring holiday are widespread and incredibly varied. They include pub crawls, ballet folklorico performances, street fairs, mariachi concerts, block parties, and specials on Mexican food and drinks. But they rarely include any reference to the original reason for the holiday—the 1862 Battle of Puebla, during which a small, Mexican army defeated the invading French forces of Napoleon III.

Interestingly, Cinco de Mayo is basically a non-event in Mexico. The historical battle is commemorated in Puebla, though not everywhere in the country. And it’s definitely not celebrated with the kind of drinking and debauchery that have led many in the U.S. to refer to the holiday as Cinco de Drinko or Drinko de Mayo.

So why do Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo with such fanfare?

Well, according to UCLA Professor David Hayes-Bautista, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo in the United States dates back to Latinos in the West during the American Civil War.

"It was all created in this country, by Latinos who supported freedom and racial equality and who were opposed to slavery, supremacy and the exclusion by government," he said.

"The news of the Mexican victory over the French Army in Puebla were celebrated, not only immediately after it happened, but every year during the Civil War. That is the origin of why we celebrate the Cinco de Mayo," added Hayes-Bautista.

However, since then, Americans have become incredibly disconnected from the origins of the event. Many confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day, which takes place on September 16. These days, many Mexican-Americans use the holiday to showcase their ethnic identity, while many other Americans use the holiday as an excuse to get drunk and enjoy the nice weather.

What do you think SodaHeads? Is Cinco de Mayo a legit historical holiday or just an excuse to drink?

It is a definite legit historical holiday. For a historical battle that took place in Puebla, Mexico. It was established May 5th, 1862. It's not celebrated as how the US does, and only regional in Mexico. But, it is a legit holiday for some. Actually, any holiday in the US is an excuse to drink for some people!

If you want a holiday that isn't really legit, May 7th is National "Masturbation" Day! Yes, I'm not kidding you~ http://tinyurl.com/bmrtv4e

I was also in Cozumal last year on the 5th of May. We waited for the Parade at Carlos and charlies and nothing happened. We asked our server about the BIG parade and party we heard about and he said what parade and party? Looks like the Americans wanted a reason to drink other than the usual ones.

Last year we were in Cozumel for Cinco de Mayo, and there was no celebration at all. Our cab driver said that it is primarily celebrated in US. Funny! Most Americans will party for no reason, and this seems a pretty good one from that standpoint.

The question is badly worded - it is a legitimate historical holiday, but it has become an excuse for Americans to party regardless of its original meaning.

The Fifth of May is not even our holiday. It's Mexico's holiday. It celebrates the final victory of Benito Juarez.

And not even Juarez, I'm sure, appreciates the Fifth of May turning into an occasion for a Fifth of Whiskey!

Absolutely nobody I know, including the few Mexican Americans know why the day is celebrated. Most think it is Mexican Independance Day. I didn't know May 16th. is actually Mexican Independance Day until just a few years ago. When I was in school, Mecha, an Hispanic political organization used the day for "Mexican (Hispanic) awareness, sinsitivity and cultural Day." Everyone else just used it as an excuse to party and "claim" they were sinsitive to Hispanic concerns. So if the illegals don't celebrate it, why should we even acknowlege it? Kinda like Kwanza, a day that was created to bring attention to that particular ethnic group.

If your not Mexican you don't really have legit reason to celebrate cinco de mayo anyways. But the Mexicans beating the French is not that surprising the French have never won a war by themselves unless you count the French revolution which was against the French lol.

Wow, you guys sicken me. I who just watched a documentary on cinco de mayo must say you guys are quite uneducated about this subject. No it is not Mexican independents day. It is a remembrance of when mexico fought off Napoleon during a battle. Its like if the US celebrated Gettysburg. So please, please, if your going to insult a holiday know what your talking about, what some of you are saying is rude.

Well i celebrate what happened that day in Mexico. It does not matter if you have Mexican heritage or not its insulting and racist to suggest a white man can not appreciate the effort and dedication that certain Mexicans had to go through during that battle.
