Vicious Dog Ordinance Would Be Breed-Neutral

Cincinnati is closer to making its vicious dog ordinance breed-neutral by removing all references to pit bulls. The city banned the dogs 11 years ago, but supporters of the breed said pit bull attacks are the result of bad owners who are attracted to a specific type of dog. "Vicious dogs are not breed-specific," said Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls.



A City Council committee voted to remove pit bulls from the vicious dog ordinance, but it must still be approved by the full council. The change has the support of the SPCA, which said the previous ordinance was flawed from the beginning because it's nearly impossible to determine which dogs are actually pit bulls. The new standards call for stiffer penalties against owners of any dogs that bite people.

    It is absolutely ludicris for anyone to judge a dog based on their breed.
    I agree that people need to be informed on the correct way to raise a dog, but I also feel that way about children.

    Large dogs are strong. You have to be a strong person to handle one (personality over physical).
    Its only prejudice that helps these claims.

    10 years ago golden retrievers were being overbred and were having temperment problems.... were goldens banned? No, because they are viewed as the "family" dog.

    I myself have a siberian husky and they are labeled on the dangerous dogs list.
    As stated by the ASPCA the temperment of a husky is:
    loving, good with children, easy to care for since they do not eat alot, overly intelligent and horrilbe guard dogs..... this puts them on the dangerous dog list.

    in the 70s it was rotweilers in the 80s german shepards

    Although aggressiveness can be bred in, the dog doesn't necessary act on it. Most aggressive dogs are abused.

    This comment is in response to all the SodaHeads on this thread who were offended by my remarks about African-Americans and Mexicans owning pit bulls. After rereading them, I realize that my post was uncalled-for and racist, and I apologize to everyone who took issue with my statements. I was wrong, and you were right.     All depends on the training, pits by nature are very loyal lovable pets when raised normally. And no I don't own a pit, I have a Lab at this time....

    Actually many Black Americans and Mexican Americans don't own pit bulls. Some only started to buy the breed in the mid 90's and the "Majority" don't own pit bulls. Thirdly; I want to make this clear; dog fighting started in Europe and continued in the U.S up until the 30's.

    In addition; the "Majority" of Latinos and Black Americans that do own the small percentages of Pit Bulls do not abuse them. These are the facts.

    And while it's true that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners, ethnicity has no bearing on what constitutes a 'bad owner' - jerks are jerks regardless of the shade of their skin.

    Ihave seen more vicious Pit Bulls in Houston,but a friend brought a sweetheart of a Pitbull in off the streets,and love it.

    Any breed can be vicious...
    I have owned a total of 6 pit bulls in the past not including the two I have now. I love them. I am more scared of chihuahuas then Pit Bulls.

    If a dog is trained to be mean, no matter what its size or degree of aggression, then it's going to be vicious. If a breed like pit bulls is raised as a member of the family, then it will become a great pet and a loving, devoted companion to its owners. I love pit bulls, and I haven't met one yet who didn't love me right back! Thanks for your comments, Chloey!

    That goes for me too...well except for my family lol,,,, that is because besides my family dogs dont expect anything in return for their love to you except to be loved back....it is not Ok I did this for you what are you going to do for me??
