When I was young, we'd always open presents from the family on Christmas Eve, then the next morning the presents from Santa!

Opening gifts on Christmas Eve totally ruins Christmas morning. I've heard of people letting their children open ONE gift on Christmas Eve and that's ok.

Some of my fondest memories of Christmas are of me and my brothers whispering in the wee hours, wondering if Santa had come yet; choosing who would sneak out to take a peak; the excited whispers "He was here!!! He was here!!!" or "Shhh! Did you hear that?!?! Were those . . . sleigh bells?!?!?!" Mind you, city kids, never heard a sleigh bell in our lives; living in an apartment, but figured that Santa somehow came through the radiator. Hey, he's magic! Gotta be Christmas morning!

Both, when I was little I was allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve. Now that I am married, we spend Christmas Eve with my family and Christmas Day with his family after we have opened our family presents here at home. We don't go up to his parents house until after 10 am. I'm so glad I wasn't my husband. He wasn't allowed to open presents on Christmas day until after his mother made breakfast and they ate it. My mother did all the major cooking on Christmas, so she wouldn't have to cook Christmas day. Breakfast consisted of cinnamon rolls and Christmas cookies. Lunch and dinner consisted of leftover turkey, ham, and baked potatoes. My family also takes their time opening presents. His family is always trying to speed things up. Last year every time my daughter opened something, it was taken from her so everyone's presents could be opened in a half hour. Also my mother in law needs a picture of each grandchild with each thing she gave them.

We always opened our presents from our grnadparents, siblings, and other family on Christmas Eve then dunring the night our parents would put out our Santa presents and we would open those in the morning. Now that I'm married we spend Christmas Eve at his dad's house, then head to my parent's house around 2am, open Santa presents Christmas morning, then go to his mom's house that night to open gifts with her.

On Christmas Eve, the entire family gathers, we put on Christmas music, eat and drink a little wine. We hire a Santa to come visit the little ones.......he sits in a chair near the fire place with them gathered around him and he reads them the story of "The Night Before Christmas".... he then gives them each a gift to open! After Santa leaves, we all exchange our gifts to each other and then sometimes we go to midnight mass if the gift opening doesn't run too late....we have many gifts, so sometimes it will...

On Christmas morning, the immediate family gathers around the tree, opens gifts, has breakfast and then we all prepare the feast for dinner that evening. After dinner, we will sometimes play a game....like monopoly.....have desert and some of us will fall asleep...usually the men in the family.....lol...!

It's a two day family gathering and has been a tradition since the day I was born....I love this time of year with my family....we are so close...

family lol family gathering tradition born love year family close family lol family gathering tradition born love year family close
