Christians: Should Christians make money off of the Word of God, through music, novels, movies, etc...?

What got me thinking about this? The verses in the Bible associated with Jesus throwing out the "gift shops" from the Temple, and how it was an atrocity to use God's place of worship as a place for profit. Therefore, what about musicians, artists, writers, and so forth, who makes money off of the Word of God: money which doesn't go to God through charity. How wrong is it to infuse the love of money with God's Word, even if it's outside of the temple and through art forms; art forms which could bring more people to the Word of God through fellowship and praise?

Everyone is entitle with their openion. For those Christian artist, composer, writer, pastor, evangelis, ministers I have my respect to all of them. It's between them and God. I had written and composed quit a few Christian music before, but I came across in my mind if I'm going to sell my song or not. Honestly yes or no it's up to me. In Deut. 8:18 God gave all of us the ability to produce wealth. But I choosed to use the ability in producing music for His own glory. Because I belived He can bless me in many different ways. Christian radio station will not play my song because they're on the business. Sharing the word of God is a command not just a word from God. So as I faithful obedient servant of the Lord we have to share His word. I did my part what's yours ?

unlike other Christian Artist who deserve to get paid. Because when you read their lyrics it's a combination of his own openions and a few words from God. So when the Christian record label, promoter, agent, radio station take in place it involves money to use in sales and marketing. They also pay christian radio station to air their talent. Then the artist became their slave going out touring in many different places, because the corporation gave them cash advance and need to pay them back and also to make a living. That is the reason why Christian Artist need to get paid not because of sharing the word of God, because of their hard work the same as the worldly you know what I mean.......
Please make no mistake I'll say that again it's because of their hard work and talent. They make their living from the sales of their records to the public.

A Christian who was called to a ministry, evangelize and use their talent in any ways make their living by the support of their followers or what they called a love gift. So there is a big difference between Christian Artist and a Christian musician evangelist or ministry.

In my opinion, the question is weird. Just because music, books, and movies may tell of the Word of God, that doesn't necessarily mean that the people who made them make money off the Word. Musicians write music, then it has to be recorded/produced, then mass produced and marketed. They do all this work to help spread the word. In my opinion they make money off their work so they can spread the free Word of God to millions. Do the people that are saved because of these things not matter? Ask someone who has been saved because of that one brief moment in time that they listened to a live band play a song that helped spread the Word of God. The Word of God changes lives. You want to blame anything, blame the economy for making it so expensive for artists to work full time at spreading the Word of God. In fact, thank God that they've been blessed with the talent to reach out to people in different ways. Also, thank God for the fact that their talent also takes care of their friends and family. It puts food in their mouths that they thank God for. They get paid for their work, and it just so happens that their work gives them the chance to spread the free Word of God. Of course, no matter what anyone says, some people will always have a way to argue any point, and it's usually the people that are too stubborn to be open to opinion.

If they weren't able to make money off of it, we wouldn't have it to enjoy. In this society, we have to make money to survive.
In the temple, people were selling their "gifts" for an exorbitant price. Kind of gouging. When people brought their "gifts" to God, their sacrifices, they had to buy them from somewhere, but these people were in the temple and they were preying on these folks that came from great distances.
I went to a Casting Crowns concert and those people sacrifice being away from their families to come and share with us. They try to be home on Sundays to be with their families and at church. They have to have the means to do both.
What they do with their money, is the same with all of us. Do they tithe? Do they give thanks to God for it.
That would be between them and God.
I for one am glad for them and others that share that gift with us.

The message you get from the story verses mine is totally in contrast; the message that I got was: You shouldn't infuse the Love of Money with God's Word. If you can't give up everything to follow God, than I think you are doing it for the wrong reasons. I don't believe that Christians wouldn't preach The Word, or not be able to, without financial gain: that's like saying, "I can't preach to you without you giving me money for my time". That seems absurd and counterproductive to the Word of God; The Word of God should be given freely and without profit: at least for me.

In any event, this is an important question to consider further than one's own beliefs. I honestly believe that the deterioration of our Christian Community is built on this Love of Money/something to gain for doing God's Will.

Even the disciples took money when they preached. Are you saying that if you do full time ministry, that you should be dirt poor?
I am a Christian full time. I will speak to anyone anytime about God. Pastors and others do the same, but they have to support their families.

Yes definitely. Jesus of the bible said "the poor you will have with you always" (Mark 14:7, matthew 26:11) more churches should help the poor than government, because churches can reach further into places than government can at the grass root level i believe....but some people may respond better to government help.......let the churches make money! (jesus should have gone to jail incidentally for "disrupting" their activities that were "member" approved.

I can't believe my eyes: you would state that Jesus Christ should go to jail for "disrupting" abominations against God, His Father, on God's Temple grounds. That is just insane: I would hope you don't claim to be a Christian.

Jesus had every right to throw out sinners from His Temple, and I shouldn't even justify that with a response.

they were using the church to profit off those who were in need... purchase of sacrificial items mainly...so that they could participate in worship. The vendors were profiting off of new believers and the poor. No proper church charges its people to attend worship. For some, just attending is an act of sacrifice. Music, books, movies... are items to help people in their walk of faith...and purchased by choice not by guilt

Personally, I think you are justifying and legitimizing something beyond the context: You are stating that gift shops should be allowed in places of Worship if they aren't forced upon the patrons? I hardly think that was the message Jesus was sending.

You feel that Bibles should be sold? A direct translation of the Word of God? No one is forcing people to buy Bibles :P

What I was getting at is: People are charging money for praise to God that should be freely given. God's Word is coming with a price Tag in altered forms: Musical Praise, Art forms, and so forth. But I'm more concern with direct linkage to conveying the Word of God: Do you think that the Word of God should ever come at a price tag? That should be an interesting question for you to answer with God's Help :)

Your question is valid... but the post talks about Novels, Music and Movies... that is different than Preaching the Word. I agree, Sunday worship...including preaching the Word should be Free. But the others are also legitimate ways for Christian artists to earn a living.

Music is a Direct form of praising God, how should that be infused with money? Therefore, I am stating that direct forms of praise/preaching the word shouldn't involve money: novels which directly praise/preach shouldn't come at a cost; music is at the heart of worshiping God's Word: this shouldn't come at a price either; and movies which convey God's Word shouldn't come at a price tag: aka Passion of the Christ.

Would you disagree that direct forms of praising/worshiping/teaching shouldn't come at a price tag? If every Christian charged for their fellowship, how are they serving God?

I think the very idea that people legitimize the Love of Money with conveying God's Word is why there is so many preachers who molest children, misrepresent God's Word, and profit instead of using God's Money for His Works. Wouldn't you agree that our Christian community has progressed worse through the Love of Money?

Agree that there is a LOT of those mis-using their position in the church to PROFIT. But I also know that most of those buying the music of artists were not present when the LIVE WORSHIP was offered. Selling CD's is a way to recoup the costs of production, and giving a living wage to those who have written, performed and produced the product.

There are many performers that do not sell their stuff... they take a donation.

I would, also, state that: Money earned from the intent of conveying God's Word shouldn't come at a price tag: music which is for praise/worship, movies made for spreading the word, and so forth, that is what I'm trying to state.

I posted all my Christian music on FB and allowed the public to download it free on tweetmysong.com type in Freddy Lamberte. The reason why I did this is because first of all the lyrics are from the word of God I mean not just a few words it's based on the biblical verses in the bible. The melody was given to me by the Holy Spirit because I asked for it. All I did is sang, composed it produced it and mastered it. Shoud I make money about the talent God gave to me ? Honestly yes or no it's up to me. In Deut. 8:18 God gave all of us the ability to produce wealth. But I choosed to use the ability in producing music for His own glory. Because I belived He can bless me in many different ways. Christian radio station will not play my song because they're on the business. They not going to make any money from me or any promoter or whoever in the Christian music business. I hope someday somehow all Christian radio station, Christian artist, writer, composer etc,etc will change their format in writing Christian music. In fact they're already made their earnings selling their records, so why not change it for Christ sake. Others felt akward sharing the word of God by speaking or comfessing the word of God to the public. But they can memorize the lyrics of someones contemporary christian music that they mention the few words about Jesus, or encouraging word or all about what Jesus did. But they don't relize how powerful the word of God by comfessing it. This is our only defense againts our enemy the (devil) by compfessing the word of God and live with it. Sharing the word of God is a command not just a word from God. So as I faithful obedient servant of the Lord we have to share His word. I did my part what's yours ?

unlike other Christian Artist who deserve to get paid. Because when you read their lyrics it's a combination of his own openions and a few words from God. So when the Christian record label, promoter, agent, radio station take in place it involves money to use in sales and marketing. They also pay christian radio station to air their talent. Then the artist became their slave going out touring in many different places, because the corporation gave them cash advance and need to pay them back and also to make a living. That is the reason why Christian Artist need to get paid not because of sharing the word of God, because of their hard work the same as the worldly you know what I mean.......
Please make no mistake I'll say that again it's because of their hard work and talent. They make their living from the sales of their records to the public.

A Christian who was called to a ministry, evangelize and use their talent in any ways make their living by the support of their followers or what they called a love gift. So there is a big difference between Christian Artist and a Christian musician evangelist or ministry.

Why not set up "gift shops" in God's Temple? Why did Jesus Throw out the marketplace that assembled in The Temple? Once you answer those questions, you will have answered your question :P

What got me thinking about this? The verses in the Bible associated with Jesus throwing out the "gift shops" from the Temple, and how it was an atrocity to use God's place of worship as a place for profit. Therefore, what about musicians, artists, writers, and so forth, who makes money off of the Word of God: money which doesn't go to God through charity. How wrong is it to infuse the love of money with God's Word, even if it's outside of the temple and through art forms; art forms which could bring more people to the Word of God through fellowship and praise?

I don't think Christian artists, performers... have a LOVE OF MONEY... it is more, a way to earn a living, while helping others in their walk of faith. That is not to say all act this way...but most!!

IT is a LOVE OF MONEY if they can't do it without MONEY :P If they can't convey the Word of God to others without a financial gain, I would compare them to the rich man that couldn't give up all of his material things to follow God.
