Cheese-Wheel Wedding Cakes: Tasty or Terrible?

“Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom will now cut the . . . cheese.” Yes, you read that right. A growing number of modern couples really have found a way to turn a time-honored wedding tradition into a fart joke.

More than ever before, to-be-weds are shoving tradition aside when planning their big day. Can a bride wear a short dress? Sure, why not! What about a solid color or even black? More power to her! “Flower men” instead of “flower girls”? Totally whimsical!

The latest addition to the list of quirky wedding trends: wedding “cakes” made from cheese. Let us be perfectly clear—we do not mean cheesecakes. We’re talking about a “cake” assembled by stacking wheels of cheese. Once the basic structure is set, the tiered-style display is often decorated with fruits, foliage, and figurines—just like with their sugary counterparts.

After the ceremonial cutting, the “cake” is dismantled into a cheese board selection. Probably one of the biggest upsides (or downsides depending on your point of view) of opting for savory over sweet: the love of your life won’t be able to smear frosting all over your face!

What do you think SodaHeads? Do cheese-wheel wedding cakes look tasty? Or are they just terrible?

    Mmmmmmm Cheese..

I still remember my wife took that stupid cake top and froze it. Instead of letting me eat it that night I ended up being a wake for 36-48 hours and 10 of those hours was silly drunk. I finally passed out on the airplane to the honeymoon. Whatever it was you were supposed to wait it was a freeze dried disaster.

But man o man I love cheese.

Can get all the freeloaders to leave the reception.

One of the most expensive costs at a wedding is the cake. I guess it would be a bit cheaper with cheese. I like cheese myself although I think that I would miss that cake with that wonderful frosting. I would go with the flow and enjoy a little Brie w/grapes.

Interesting concept. Anybody can have a regular wedding cake with all the sugar and such, a cake made of cheese with all the trimmings is cool I think!

If that's what the bride and groom want, then what's wrong with it. I would hope there might also be some cake for those who really want a piece. But that's not 100% necessary. Many weddings have drifted from ye olde traditions to new ideas. Emily Post's book on the "proper" weddings is a real doozie to read through. So many pitfalls for the uninformed that it's almost impossible to have an affordable traditional wedding anymore because you have to hire experts to make sure all the proper steps are followed.

So, yeah, I have been to big traditional, simplified homey types and everything in between. I think it's pretty much up to what the marrying couple want. After all, it's going to be their memories for the future. [P.S. As long as the departure isn't bizarre. I draw the line at that.]

Doesn't work....I have had this problem for years and nothing works...sigh...even ice cream is a no go......and don't get me started on chocolate.....

An interesting fact is that most cheese actually contains very little lactose due to the processing. The hard cheeses are particularly low in lactose. I'm lactose intolerant and can eat cheese all day with no problem. But if I have something along the lines of a milk shake, I better take a Lactaid, or there will be trouble!

I know way too much about these things. Take 500 mg of magnesium and there should be no problem.
