Salt of earth

It
is a long held belief that the spilling of salt is a portent of evil.
In ancient times, salt was indispensible in the preservation of food and
difficult to attain. It was such a rare and valuable commodity that
salt was literally worth its weight in gold and often used as legitimate
currency. Spilling something so precious could be seen as nothing less
than ominous.

The
spilling of salt was, in fact, considered nearly blasphemous. Leaving
the hapless offender exposed to temptation, bad luck and other such bad
things.

spilling salt blasphemous nbsp leaving hapless offender exposed temptation luck
People
believed that the good spirits lived on the right side and the bad
spirits lived on the left side; perhaps because the devil sits at the
left hand of God or maybe that he is to the left of the straight and
narrow path. Picture the classic image of a devil on one shoulder and an
angel on the other. The bad guy is most often portrayed sitting on the
left side.

In
any case, tossing the salt over the left shoulder is throwing the salt
into the face of the demon that lurks there . . . and this should be
done with the right or “good” hand.

Throughout
history, the association of right with good and left with bad caused a
number of perfectly respectable left-handed people to be burned at the
stake.

history association caused number perfectly respectable left-handed people burned stake

Perhaps
the notion of spilt salt being a bad omen is somewhat validated by the
betrayal of Jesus by his disciple Judas. If you look closely at the
Leonardo da Vinci's painting of The Last Supper you will see that Judas
Iscariot has knocked over a salt-cellar. A sign of the treachery soon
to follow? It’s something to consider.

I'm old enough to remember ..
the prejudice against the true lefty ..
(and yes, I AM one of those true lefties .. I never was able to write with my Right Hand .. like was demanded when I was a child)
(I also remember particularly one instructor .. who in my native tongue ... when they saw that I wrote with my left hand .. in school .. at the desk .. "Tool of the Devil" .. )

NEEDLESS to say .. I grew up strong indeed .. no matter what .. was true to myself and to this date .. I am proud that I survived, thrived .. and yes, have no problem being Left-oriented in a Right-Oriented World.

Salt was something that they used to refrigerate their meats back in the past. It was only considered bad if you consume to much of it.

Interesting read. I always throw salt over my shoulder when I spill some. I never knew why but i did. Now if I knew why I walk around ladders. LOL. I never heard about how evil it was to be left handed. I had to learn to use my left hand when I broke my arm. Lucky I had that left hand.

SALARY (n.) mid-14c., "compensation, payment," whether periodical, for regular service or for a specific service; from Anglo-Fr. salarie (late 13c.), O.Fr. salarie, from L. salarium "salary, stipend," originally "soldier's allowance for the purchase of salt," from neut. of adj. salarius "pertaining to salt," from sal (gen. salis) "salt".

I am a proud lefty. I'm lucky that I never had anyone try to get me to be a righty. I hoped like the dickens that one of my chidren would be left handed, but no. None of my grandchildren either. At least they'll be spared from burning at the stake......unless of course one of them turns out to be a witch. LOL

Jesus knew Judas was going to betray Him and told them there. It was predestined. Judas was the greedy treasurer for the Disciples. He reprimanded Mary for anointing Jesus's feet with Spikenard a very expensive oil in those days 300 denarii todays worth $6000

    John chapter 12: vs 3-5.

He felt his guilt and remorse and hung himself. Committed suicide instead of asking forgiveness. Still we all are responsible for our actions. We have to make decisions of right or wrong. If Jesus is your Saviot you are a child of God, adopted ithrough the shed Blood of Jesus the Son of God and have Life more Abundant being able to go before God and asking forgiveness in the name of Jesus the Son

But, if I was conceived in sin and it wasn't my fault why do I have to ask for forgiveness?
  • USC Gam... BlytheS... 2012/07/12 16:07:54

It is a given..all have sinned and to enter through the Gates of Heaven one has to accept Jesus as his/her Savior and ask for the forgiveness of the sins we have committed. Since none are perfect except Jesus we have life and life more abundant and have the open door to Jesus anytime. We continue to sin even things in our heart but Jesus will forgive. But there is a catch. If you are really a child of God and you know something is wrong you will not do that but if you do God will punish as our earthly fathers have punished us IF you really have given your life to Jesus. Your conscious and the Holy Spirit will guide you IF YOU LISTEN. We know right from wrong.

Perhaps da Vinci's artistic license and way of telling what Judas did? It was painted in the late 1400's after all.

Don't think so, after Lot & his two daughters fled to a cave, they got him drunk on two nights & laid with him unknowingly, giving rise to the Moabites & the Ammonites - Genesis 19:30-8

    I'm not making this up!
