Charter schools are public schools that are very much independent from a school district, meaning they have less restrictions, but in exchange must "improve academic performance." Most Charters are therefore run by private, nonprofit organizations, or by local teachers, parents, or activists.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has one of the greatest number of Charters in their district. LAUSD Charters were seen to have outscored regular LAUSD public schools in almost every category, faring them better academically.

Home schooling may be the best. At least you know everything that's being taught. And you know that gallons of cool-aid aren't being forced down your kids throat. The drawback is he might not know how to put a condom on a cucumber........................

I would prefer a regular public school.

I'm quite content with my school, of course, I've not had the experience of going to anything but public school, so I suppose I'm just used to it. I mean, it's not fantastic, but that's not because of the kind of school, it's more because I have a short attention span, and I find being indoors and doing the same thing each day to be exhausting. Winter is brutal, since miuns 30 degrees C is not great weather to eat lunch outside in. But fall and spring are lovely, and I'm alright as long as I get some time outside.

Ive been to both Charter schools and public schools. really they arent that great. They are cheap and so picky. like you get fined for EVERYTHING!! no joke. and really most of my teachers didn't teach me a damn thing... it was a useless waste of my time... Plus (I really gotta be honest) one day I like sluffed all day and just roamed the hallways nobody DID anything about it... and a ton of teachers saw us. no it was NOT on the last day of school either. we had like four weeks left. so yeah the teachers were dumb.

NEA dominated public schools are socialism at its worse -- low quality, low motivation, low results. Just about the only thing there's a lot of is left wing propoganda mixed in with this and that. One of the worse wastes of community facilities are schools. They ought to just give parents money to educate their kids and turn the school facilities over to someone who rents them to whoever wants to teach (aka something like charter schools).

I would prefer a Charter school.

I go to a charter school for arts and it's amazing! This was my first year there and i used to go to a public school. For me, the coolest thing was that the academics can be geared and related to arts, or whatever the charter school specializes in. It gets kids who are alike together and teaches them in a way that appeals to them. It's soooo much fun!

I prefer private schools over public schools.

i prefer private because i go to one myself.
i been to both public and private and i just think that the private ones are better
  • [-] Mr. T suzann June 11, 2008 19:25:27
do you have to wear uniforms? If so, do you mind it?
  • +2 raves [-] suzann Mr. T June 12, 2008 11:20:51
yea we do have to wear uniforms
but i find them quite good
because it makes all the students equal
so you can't really tell if they are rich or poor
and the blazer might be quiet uncomfortable but you move on
  • [-] running... suzann June 13, 2008 02:42:08
Why do you think private schools are better? Just curious.
  • +1 raves [-] suzann running... June 13, 2008 10:15:39
the standards are higher and they are more disciplined
and im not speaking of all public schools
its just that the ones i went to had a poor standard of learning
  • +1 raves [-] running... suzann June 13, 2008 21:32:40
Ah, see, the few mates I've had that went to private schools said their parents paid for their grades, but I suppose not all would be that way. Of course, it was a private Catholic school the two of them had gone to, so I suppose ruling out private schools altogether wouldn't be right.
  • [-] suzann running... June 14, 2008 07:51:06
    yeaa
    well they are pretty expensive
and its always important about how the child feels in the school
and also its imprtant with comfortability
so its always usually how the parents feel which sometimes is caused by stupid reasons
  • [-] running... suzann June 14, 2008 14:42:17
Yeah, it was the whole "it costs too much" reason my mum never sent me to private school, not that I really cared, haha.
  • [-] suzann running... June 16, 2008 11:32:36
    yea
i actually chose which school to go to
my mum didnt care just as long it didnt reach the limit of money it can cost
  • [-] running... suzann June 16, 2008 15:03:32
That's cool. Our limit was $0 so it was off to public school. Can't say I really cared, haha.
  • +1 raves [-] suzann running... June 17, 2008 09:36:47
i was gonna go to a public school at first
thats when i first came to australia
buht the school wanted us to pay $7,500 for a year
so then we went to a private school and they were cheaper
now i just ended up going to a private hs even though itsa more expensive then a public buht iono somehow i ended up going there

I would prefer a Charter school.

See i'm biased i go to a charter school. I've never been to a public school but i wouldn't transfer over for anything. I love my school. I love my teachers and i love the type of people at the school. I have a closeness with some of my teachers that you just can't get anywhere else. I know if am having a bad day i can go talk to that teacher and cry a little and she'll listen. Our teachers love what they do and i learn so much from them, wether it's talking to them one on one or in the classroom. The school lets me learn about things i'm passionate about and because of that i learn more because i actually want to. I think charter schools are great things, when used correctly. I just happen to have found the best charter school ever!

  • +1 raves [-] Emi Kay Beloved June 11, 2008 12:26:40
You don't get a whole lot of kids there that don't want to be at school. It's like everyone there has actually chosen to go there, but at a public school a lot of kids seem forced to go.
  • [-] Mr. T Emi Kay June 11, 2008 19:26:36
that must be why they seem to score better academically... if the kids actually want to be there, they are more likely to learn. =)

The cool thing about a charter school is that it's publicly funded so it doesn't cost a lot more to go ther. I think we pay like 200 dollars or something a year and the school gets most of it's money from fundraisers and performances. It allows for the oppotunity to be available for everyone!
