Catholic Bishop: Children Want to Be Sexually Abused

The Bishop of Tenerife provided an interesting explanation for the vast numbers of children raped by Catholic priests: They asked for it.

In 2007, when the American Catholic Church was reeling from sex abuse scandals but not so much Europe, the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, made some interesting Christmas holiday comments.

In a Christmas Eve interview with La Opinión de Tenerife, Bishop Alvarez said that there are children who want to be abused:

There are 13 year old adolescents who are under age and who are perfectly in agreement with, and what’s more wanting it, and if you are careless they will even provoke you.

That’s right, the rapists aren’t the priests. It’s those seductive tempters and temptresses, fresh-faced whores all, bending over in front of priests, flaunting their taut, young, moist flesh, just begging to be used as the sexual playthings of perverted pedophiles (and hebephiles) who have sworn to their imaginary friend that they will be celibate for life.

It’s probably their plan to sue later and retire on the Catholic Cult’s ill-gotten loot. After all, so many seem to be doing it!

Bishop Alvarez got some bad press shortly thereafter:

The controversial comments drew immediate criticism, including from the Spanish government, which hinted that it might review its relations with the Church unless action was taken against the Tenerife Bishop. Gay rights groups and child welfare associations called on the authorities to prosecute the Bishop for inciting and defending abuse of minors, while left-wing political parties demanded that the Pope sack Alvarez immediately.
In 2008, the Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGT) filed a criminal complaint against him for “identifying homosexuality with the sexual abuse of minors” and for “promoting an attitude of violence and discrimination” against homosexuals:

“It seems that he is justifying the abuse of minors, coming from an institution that has been condemned the most times in the world for sexual abuse,” said [FELGT president Antonio] Poveda. “It is necessary for the hierarchy to be respectful and to know that as citizens they have freedom of expression, but they also have to respect the standards that are set by the laws in this country and in this case they have passed that boundary, therefore we hope that the Attorney General will intervene to prevent such lamentable declarations from being made again.”
Despite the outcry at the time, it appears to have been a flash in the pan. The most recent story on Bishop Alvarez? The 2009 reopening of the Bishop’s Palace in La Laguna, damaged by fire in 2006.

La Laguna – 11.07.2009 – Before blessing the building, the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, summed up his feelings in just two words, “satisfaction and thanks”. Satisfaction with the work done, and thanks to the thousands of people, institutions, companies, parishes and many more, “without whose support and solidarity it would not have been possible to complete the work”.
Seems Alvarez is still Bishop, and likely still blaming children for being raped. Perhaps the Vatican will hire him as Benedict’s new PR agent!

Everyone knows kids remember lessons better with participation. All this stuff about pedophilia is just misunderstanding a "hands-on" approach to sex education.

Reminds me of a old story of two Irishmen working under a street in New York. They have a little tent set up over a manhole with an opening facing the entrance to a brothel. Presently a rabbi comes along, looks around and then hurries in. "Did you see that, a man of God going into a house of ill repute? says one. "Yes, it is a shame what the world has come to" says the other. Then a protestant minister comes along, looks around and hurries into the brothel. "Did you see that" says the first, more excited, "a Christian minister going into that house of sin?" "Yes'" says the other, "it is disgraceful what society has sunk to." Then a Catholic priest comes along, looks around, and hurries in. "Did you see that?" says the first man, "Father O'Reilly went in that place." "Yes" says his friend, "some poor soul must have died."

Well if he said this he is an idiot. That is like saying a murder victim wanted someone to kill them.
Well I went to a meeting last Saturday and this Msr. stated that any Catholic priest that abuses a youth is a disgrace to his call. He is a representative of Christ and he totally disrespects his church and call.

It is beyond belief that anyone could rise to that level in the catholic church and be this stupid. And to actually try to defend this publicly is outrageous.

It makes me laugh that the same organization that goes to such pains to tell people how to live their lives is trying to blame raping kids on the kids. These kinds of comments make me wonder why the catholic faith is still seen as a faith instead of a elite group of child molesters posing as a faith.

No, but it's a fact that teenage children engage in sexual behavior, including sexual predation. An act by an adult is not and cannot be justified by that fact. It's just that portraying the man's words in such a way as to leave open the possibility he was referring to little children, who are not sexually motivated, is a bit unfair.

I know that teenagers are sexual beings (BOY do I know). IMHO, however, NO ADULT has any business engaging in any sexual conduct whatsoever with a child of any age. If an adult is approached by any "teenage sexual predator", that adult has a responsibility to get the hell out of Dodge, to RUN, not walk, away from that child. Sorry, but I can't consider that there are any legitimate exceptions to this rule.

We agree completely. There remains the spectacle of a teen prostitute of any age or level of predation that at the very least should be addressed. If nothing else, clarification should be part of this thread that rules out toddlers which as it stands are implicitly part of this. But your point is right on. No disagreement here.

As you said, it's never acceptable to prey on minors, period. But let's be honest...there are teenagers who prowl our streets as prostitutes and god knows what else. The discussion doesn't necessarily change, but let's at least exclude prepubescents from the mix...they do not prowl our streets and they were not part of the offending comments of this church official. That's all I'm trying to say.
  • Mark In... Georgia50 2012/01/27 01:42:52

so, what is acceptable conduct when one encounters "teenagers who prowl our streets as prostitutes and god knows what else"?

Technically it would be determined by the laws in a given jurisdiction. For me personally, I would tend to take the moral high road.

For a priest, pastor, or any clergy of any faith, there should never be a hint of sexual immorality, period, end of discussion.
  • Mark In... Georgia50 2012/01/28 01:16:14
    Mark In Irvine
i don't know what you mean about the "moral high road". when a kid is on the streets selling his or her body for sex, the "john" who becomes a customer is the guilty party, not the kid IMHO.

Agreed. By "moral high road" I mean I would not consort with teenagers in a sexual manner whether they are 13 or 19.
