Canyon College Fake Degrees: What Do You Think of Online Colleges?

Kim [Ninja]™ August 21, 2008 19:56:13

If you're Janet Killen, who spent $5,500 and four years of effort earning what she thought was a master's degree from online college,Canyon College, then you're probably pretty upset about online schools. When Janet Killen presented her nursing degree in 2007 to Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, where she teaches nursing, she was crushed to learn it was worthless.

Harvey Lyter, proprietary schools coordinator for the Idaho State Board of Education, said that under Idaho law, Canyon College doesn't have the authority to be giving degrees.

"The issue with Canyon College is that they're not accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or the Idaho State Board of Education," he said.

A lot of online colleges are bogus, including the places that "accredit" them. However, a lot of online colleges are accredited and offer quality education.
Canyon College is a scam, like a lot of online colleges.
Canyon College is not bad. You just have to be careful which one you choose.

Never heard of 'em. If I were going to go back to school and do it online, I would check out FULLY any school that I was interested in - including the accreditations. No sense wasting money on a worthless piece of paper!

I know a lot of people believe in them, but I can assure you that they're referred to as "degree factories" by all the professors I've spoken with. Might just be a bit of professional jealousy, but I've heard stories like this about Canyon College told about more than just them.

Not to mention they won't leave you alone even if you show a little interest in online schooling. I thought about it, but I'd rather be in school with people and discussions.

Most people don't check. They see "accredited by" and assume that no one would make up such and organization, so this online college must be okay. Sadly, they forget that people are sending out all sorts of official and legitimate sounding e-mails that are actually phishing attempts too.

What a shame, I wonder if she has a recourse.

My niece in law received her Masters from Phoenix University on-line, as she was teaching while studying for it..she did have to go to Phoenix for her graduation ceremony and to receive her degree..so, not all are bad.

I can't get anywhere with your link, but it's my understanding that the University of Phoenix isn't a scam. They are accredited, although not necessarily with the most pretigious of accreditating groups. I think their real "problem" is that they are in it for profit -- that can lead to various sorts of messes. But they don't award phony degrees

the last on is for phoenix - yes they are scams and in it for profit and in the on line 'class' you will learn very little and get it done in no time at all

You know -- again, with all due respect -- I read through all those complaints about Phoenix and they seem to break down into money complaints (that fits the problem I listed about them being in it for the money) and complaints by people who sound like they just aren't attentive students.

But mostly money problems. That's just not, in my mind, the same thing as a place that gives out phony degrees. It's bad, but not the same as what this poll is talking about.
