Can You Judge a Person By Their Shoes?

You!

You're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but shoes are apparently a whole different story. Recent reports show that shoes reveal a lot about the wearer's personality. If you're agressive, ankle boots are your thing. If you're a more agreeable person, practical shoes are your pick. And the list goes on and on. Do you think you can judge a person by what kind of shoes they're wearing?

BLOOMBERG.COM reports:
If you have been reading newspapers or websites, listening to the radio or watching TV over the past few weeks, you have probably heard the news: “You CAN judge a person by his shoes.” Beginning in mid-June, word of a psychology article titled “Shoes as a source of first impressions” began circling the globe.

You may be able to deduce a few things from a pair of shoes, but, it will be impossible to get a clear picture without further observation and/or investigation.

I know a millionaire who shops at Payless for shoes. He became a millionaire through frugal living, but, a person looking "solely" at his shoes might believe incorrectly that he is poor.

no, people generally wear shoes that suit the day... Going running? Trainers. Raining? Boots. Sunny? Sandals. Walking? Practical shoes.

But there are different variations of each kind of those shoes. Sandals for instance, can give a lazy look, a trendy fashionable look, a comfortable practical look.. etc, and that is what (I believe) gives the insight into someone's character.

    Okay then.
So a good man, let's say he's a priest, has the scrappiest pair of shoes you've ever seen. They're scuffed and covered with mud. It's not right for one to just judge right off the bat, "Oh, this man is poor, dirty and probably carrying some STD" when in actuality, his shoes are used often in home visits and he would rather use the money for charity, running the church, the Diocese, etc.
The same can be done for a man wearing Prada loafers. "Ah, he's the man's man, the ladies' man, he's the man I want to be". In actuality, he's running a sweatshop in the back of a warehouse in some suffering country.
    WHY take the chance?
    WHY jump the gun?
    WHY JUDGE?
  • El Jefe Valerie© 2012/08/21 12:09:48
    El Jefe
The problem with your example is that, I don't think that's the way shoe judging is supposed to work. Take the Prada loafers guy for example. I believe that those shoes actually say that he is trendy, up with fashion (which says something about him socially, like he's fast paced maybe), and more of a businessmen man than a worker.
And for the record, why can't he be the man I want to be and run a sweatshop?
  • Valerie© El Jefe 2012/08/21 13:05:05
    Valerie©
I guess we're going to have to disagree. So if the man wearing Prada loafers is rich, chances are he doesn't even choose his own clothing, but rather uses a personal shopper.
Are you saying you want to run a sweatshop?
  • El Jefe Valerie© 2012/08/21 22:05:19
    El Jefe
Chances are what you said you made up right on the spot.
No, I don't want to run a sweatshop, I just thought it was interesting that the characteristics you gave him he could have and still run a sweatshop.
  • Valerie© El Jefe 2012/08/22 01:46:22
    Valerie©
Um, yes, of course I made it up right on the spot? The examples I am using were all "made up on the spot"? My father has many friends, some good, some bad. I had a particular one in mind when I made the example, and yes, he does use a personal shopper.
Not that I have any statistics in front of me, but when I think of a man who oversees a sweatshop, that man is rich.
  • El Jefe Valerie© 2012/08/22 05:37:14
    El Jefe
When I said "made it up on the spot" I actually meant "pulled it out of your ass" but I thought that was kind of rude an unnecessary.
And you're dad's friend is just one person. Your dad's friends are probably not a good sample group for the behaviorism of entire populations.

When the question asked "can a person be judged by their shoes?" I took the word "judged" to mean that a person's character is at least semi-represented by their shoes. Being rich, is a characteristic of someone. The ethics of judging people I guess is up to individuals, obviously you have a problem with it, but weather you like it or not when someone first meets you 80% of their first impression of you is based on how you look.
A lot can be determined by one's looks; social class, occupation, self esteem, cleanliness, beiefs...on and on
  • Valerie© El Jefe 2012/08/22 11:21:54
    Valerie©
I'm sorry, I still don't know what you mean. I pull all my ideas out of my ass. They have to come to me somehow.
I'm not giving examples of entire populations, I gave two examples of hypothetical *people*.
I guess I should explain more about myself. My mother has been highly involved with the church my entire life. Around the time when I was 12, a member of the church and a friend of mine was killed in an accident. That changed me. I went through years of therapy, met with the priest, and put all of my trust in God-- and then I became an entirely different person. Now I don't judge--because if you could see the world from my point of view, it's sad. The levels are all of and negativity is spreading. I love my God, and I want to repay him in any amount I can, so now, even though it is hard and extremely exhausting, I try to leave the judgemental behaviors of society and people in general as far from myself as I can. I'm not saying I'm trying to be a saint, but I do ask myself WWJD 100 times daily. And would Jesus judge someone by their shoes? Not a chance.

And for the people who are judging me 80% on my looks: You are not the kind of person I would be interested in knowing nor whose judgement I trust.

You can judge what shoes they like to wear. Also you ca judge how much money they probably have(ie someone with high end designer shoes probably is on the higher pay scale), along with what they've been doing or are going to be doing(if the shoes are covered in mud the person was outside and walking through mud, if in stilettos they probably aren't planning on walking a lot).
You they won't tell you everything about a person, but they can tell you a lot if you kow how to look at them.
