The first hospital in the United States was established in--no, not NYC--Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1751. Evidently it was Benjamin Franklin's idea. The first IV, however, didn't come until 1832, invented by Dr. Thomas Latta, mainly to treat Cholera by replacing sick body fluids.
Hospitals today, of course, have a lot more equipment than IVs, but according to the assignment we were only supposed to write one paragraph.
