Can you have a "real" party without alcohol?

CBS reported yesterday that there was no alcohol served at Treasury Secretary Geithner's going away party, which made made me think of the question, "do you need to serve alcohol for it to be a real party?"

Of course, you can do an elegant tea party without alcohol, but I do think serving alcohol can be a big part of the fun.

I've been to many great parties where no spirits or other alcohol was served. All you need is the high spirits of the people attending. If you need alcohol to make it fun, you probably need to invite a more interesting group of people!

Obviously haven't been to any raves :p

I get what you are getting at, and yes a party without any 'poisons' is not usually as 'fun'.

That's only because our definition of fun has degraded heavily as we have modernized.

As a geek iv'e been to many LAN parties which were brilliant fun and had no booze, not for everyone though.

As a bodybuilder iv'e also been to numerous parties where people are literally afraid of the carbs in alcohol (haha) and those were still some pretty fun parties too.

Just like your name, "Awesome!" I lost my voice the next day because I was screaming a whole lot during the concert! Really enjoyed it to the fullest!
I believe they performed in Texas just nights ago; ah lucky people!

I am also fond of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers whom are another fave band. Maroon5 as well. Do you like those groups also?

I haven't listened to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I only know Maroon 5, not really a big fan of them but I do like a few of their old songs.

well, tom petty is rock and I always liked their music. These days I am not much into hard rock but do appreciate all kinds of music anyway. Check out some of Tom Petty's songs on you tube.

Ok, I'll check him out. I'm not into hard rock either, I mostly listen to alternative rock. These are the bands that I love: The Cure, My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, The Used, Pet Shop Boys, The Smashing Pumpkins.

I personally dislike it less with certain groups of friends due to lack of self control they have when drunk. Sometimes though it spices up the party just right. But living in a Mormon community even thought I am not mormon I still had to learn the ways of partying without booze. And in many cases its funner not always but I almost never regret a party without booze. With booze I am always waking up to someone less pretty than I would ever consider. Or waking up in pools of stuff I am not sure what it is or not entirely sure where i am or how I got there.

I really wouldn't mind because I don't drink alcohol. I'm afraid I might get drunk, act stupid and embarrass myself or worse. I could never forget what I did the last time I was drunk. I kissed someone's wife and poured champagne all over her head. then dove in a pool

Nope. I can, honestly, say I am a tee-totaler. Never had an alcoholic drink in my life.
